Comfort Reads by Laura Hunsaker

Lately I feel like I've been in a reading slump. You know, that feeling where you keep picking up a new book and it just doesn't click for you?
I've started three or four books and haven't been able to finish them. I hate when that happens!

The worst part is that I'm pretty sure I'll like the books, I'm just not in the mood for them. Being a moody reader can sure stink.

Some friends and I were talking about this just the other day. Sometimes when I DNF (do not finish) a book, it's hard to put it down. I want to push on, to persevere....but should my favorite hobby be something I have to push myself to do? I need to make myself understand it's okay to set a book aside for later. I have a great example of that. I have been trying to read Nora Roberts' The Three Fates for months now. It just isn't clicking for me. Typically I enjoy her books, especially the ones that are connected like this is, and yet...I can't get past the 4th chapter.

So what do you do when you're stuck like that?

Do you switch up genres? Force yourself to finish whatever you pick up?

For me, I tend to go for a comfort read. Comfort reads are old favorites that I know I already love, and that won't let me down.

Some of my comfort reads are:

Anything Ilona Andrews. I just re-read the Hidden Legacy series, and it's one that gets better each time.

Cynthia Eden's Devil In Disguise is so intense and surprising and wonderful.

Sarah MacLean"s Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake I can't tell you how many times I've read that book.

Monica McCarty's Highland Warrior is another I've worn out re-reading.

And our own Bonnie Edwards' Love In a Pawn Shop

So tell me, what are your comfort reads? Are you a moody reader?

  1. Nice cover and title. I'll check it out. Yes, there are definitely times a book doesn't resonate and I put it down, knowing it will be the perfect read at a different time.

  2. LOL I think you just described me! I never really thought about it. I've been reading Jackie Collins older books lately. More suspense type books.
    Great Blog!

    1. Thanks! I think sometimes we just have to table a book for later. And then, who knows? Maybe it'll click for us later?

  3. Years ago, I never would have thought of not finishing a book I started. But now my time is too precious to read stuff that isn't doing it for me. If the story is interesting but the writing is poor, sometimes I'll just skim through the pages quickly to see what happens.
As for my go-to reads when I need a guaranteed "love" I go to the first four Bridgerton books by Julia Quinn. I can't get enough of Anthony, Benedict, Colin and Daphne!!

    1. I know what you mean-I used to feel so guilty if I didn't finish a book!

  4. I’m on your list of comfort reads? Wow! I had no idea. thank you so much. I think I really needed to hear this now. My comfort reads are anything by Elizabeth Hoyt. But I’m enjoying the books I’m reading from our own Romance Gems, too. They’re something for everyone.

  5. Yes, I always forced myself to finish, BUT now I have three books I've started and haven't finished. I'm in the same reader slump. Geesh. Am currently reading Romancing the Stone. Never read it. Loved the movie. Was written in the 80s and can see differences that were allowed (or was it just for her book?) like sections of omniscient viewpoint. But it's a fun read so I keep reading that Joan Wilder story.

  6. I always try to finish books. It's getting harder to do that and I don't know why. I do the same as you and re-read stuff I love. For me it's anything Mary Balogh. I also really like Linda Howard. Congrats on the release! It sounds great!

    1. I'm such a moody reader that I guess I need to be in the mood for certain books.

  7. I never thought of that term before, but it's right on the nose, isn't it? I hate how many books I don't finish anymore, but there just isn't time do do something I don't like. Sigh.

    1. Our time is precious and I've learned it's okay to not finish a book I'm not loving. I figure that I'm just making room for a book I will enjoy.

  8. I'm a compulsive reader, but I've got to the point where I do set books aside. So many books; so little time. *g* I read through a lot of genres and usually have dozens of books on my Kindle so it's easy to start another book. If I'm in a blue funk, I go for a comfort read.
