Giveaways, are they worth the work? @ConstanceBretes #RomanceGems

Each month, I offer my subscribers a chance to enter a giveaway with anywhere from 4 authors to 14 authors giving away one of their romance only ebooks. I started doing this three years ago, and have found good success with it.

There are a couple of reasons I do this. It is a chance to help promote other authors and their romance genre and it provides an opportunity for me to be linked with other authors. So in essence, we are helping each other to promote our work.

I limit the giveaway to each author giving only one of their ebooks. The reason? Well, writing our books, it’s hard work. We have spent many days and hours holed up writing. It’s a lonely profession, and we authors do have to put food on the table just as every other American.

I have established some ‘rules’ over the three years in effort to improve the quality of the giveaway. My ‘rules’ are:
1.      Must be a romance ebook, any genre
2.      Quite a few of my subscribers are outside the US. Should offer an ebook in PDF, MOBI or EPUB. Paperbacks or hardcover books are an expense and you can offer it if you are willing to pay the postage to ship overseas or outside US.
3.      Help me to promote the books throughout the month. I used to promote to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Booktropolis, now I’m down to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
4.      The only requirement for entries are that they put their full name and email address in the giveaway. I don’t require things such as signing up for newsletters, following authors, etc. I keep the giveaway as just that…a giveaway.
5.      Authors must follow-up with winners to ensure the winners get their ebooks. Failure to do so will mean that the author will not be allowed in again.

In addition to putting the giveaway in my newsletter to my subscribers, I also place the newsletter on my website, with the rafflecopter in it so the general public can enter.

I average from 25 entries up to 200 entries each month. The Christmas holidays are the biggest for the giveaways.

In addition to other authors participating, I offer one of my books each month in the giveaway. This month, I’m offering Delayed Justice, my very first published romance.

So here are the two links:

In this month's giveaway, (April Showers Romance Ebook Giveaway) my book, Delayed Justice, is being offered.

Can two former lovers set aside their differences and work together to bring a criminal to justice?

Five years ago, Sami Parker’s life was changed forever when she was injured in a bombing incident which left another young woman dead—a woman who happened to be the fiancĂ©e of Sheriff Makeeta Robertson, Sami’s former lover. Initially, Sami was a suspect in the crime, but the sheriff was forced to release her due to a lack of evidence. The town, convinced that she got away with murder, turned against her.

At last an arrest has been made and the sheriff needs Sami’s help to get a conviction, but can she trust him? Although wary and cautious, she wants to see this man brought to justice and wants to clear her own name once and for all. But the awakening feelings she has for Makeeta bring yet another problem. Then there’s the secret she’s kept for the last five years—one she may not be able to keep any longer, and one that may change the outcome of the trial.

  1. I found some authors that I like through giveaways, and free books on Amazon. I recently bought all the books available from a romance author (11 books!) because I read one book for free, got hooked up and wanted to read every book available from her.

Now I'm trying to read at least one book from every Romance Gems author. I'm sure I'll like some (or most) of them.

Particularly, I'm a frugal person - and I don't spend on clothes or make-up anymore, so buying books is my way of treating myself.

I know that a lot of people just want stuff for free, so giveaways are not always the best investment.
And as a reader, I do get a lot of books for free - some independent authors give their books in exchange for reviews on Amazon, in an attempt to get higher rankings.
    It's a competitive market.

  2. I participate in a couple of group giveaways from time to time. I'm also a monthly supporter of N.N. Light's giveaway. I do like the concept of not requiring the reader to do anything for their entry.

  3. I gave away an ebook to my subscribers this month. I often have a contest to give away a Kindle ebook to my newsletter subscribers and several times I've given away copies of old paperbacks. I think subscribers appreciate it.

  7. I have a permanently free first book which has been quite helpful. Talking with dh today and he mentioned how often we see "get a free month" type of lures for all sorts of subscriptions.Free books rock!

  8. Connie, I like Giveaways--hey, what woman doesn't? *g* They can be a lot of work unless you share the burden with others. Btw, that's the cutest Easter egg graphic I've seen. *LOL*

  9. I'm sorry: could you please list the possible links where the Easter egg is hidden? I searched everywhere to no avail. Thank you so much!

  10. I do enjoy giveaways, especially when it allows me to connect with readers. Plus, I've discovered great new-to-me authors by receiving their book at a conference or event. Awesome, too, when authors bundle their books. :)
