Romance from the Heart by Constance Bretes #RomanceGems

Constance Bretes, known as Connie here on Romance Gems, is having some medical issues at the moment.

I told her I'd step in and blog for her today.

Let me tell you a little about Connie Bretes. After 38+ years, she retired from working for the State of Michigan and dived into writing.

She loves researching and writing. To date, she's written and published more than a dozen novels ranging from Contemporary Romance to Romantic Suspense.

Her romance novels are often set in different parts of the country, but her favorite place to set a book is Montana. The last few years have been challenging for Connie. She and her husband had moved to Montana, but the altitude in the Big Sky State was a challenge they could not overcome. Regretfully, they moved farther south and now make their home in Alabama.

A Note from Connie

I write contemporary romance where my characters are all down-to-earth everyday people who meet and fall in love. Most of them meet up with their past loves and rekindle the romance!

I have been writing romance for about ten years now and published my first book, Delayed Justice, 2013. I love writing and since getting my first book published, it's been a great ride!

Trio of Connie's Books

Here's a diverse sampling of Connie's romance novels.

Can a little girl's love and the true magic of Christmas bring Stefan and Laura together forever?

Liz Grey left Sage Brush, Wyoming, and the only man she ever loved, twelve years ago to be a cop in one of the biggest cities in the US. She returned a disgraced cop and was lucky to find a position at the county sheriff department.

Aaron Mansfield is a sergeant at the county sheriff substation. When he receives a phone call informing him that a dead body has been discovered on his father's ranch, he has no idea it will change his life.

Can the cold case murder investigation be solved, and in the process, bring two ex-lovers back together again?

Marcus Blackhawk is on a mission to locate the Sacred Arrows that were stolen from the Cheyenne Nation.

Nicole Lancaster ekes out a living in a small town by helping her brother run a motel and working part-time in a restaurant. Her mundane life suddenly becomes more exciting when Marcus arrives in town asking about the arrows she found while hiking in the Elkhorn Mountains.

The gorgeous man makes her heart beat fast, but she knows he'd never be interested in a Plain Jane like herself. Can the search for stolen Sacred Arrows lead to much more?

Real Towns/Cities or Fictional? @ConstanceBretes @RomanceGems

I’ve moved around a lot in my life and have experienced small towns, midsize towns, and large cities.
When I start a new book, one of the first things I do is decide what kind of town or city I will use in the book.

If I haven’t visited the town or city, if it is possible, I will plan a trip there to get a feel for the area.
I rarely use the actual name, substituting the names such as Basin, Montana to Mason, Montana, Philipsburg, Montana to Frankenburg, Montana.

The reason I change town/city names is due to changes I have to make in the story. For example, I love the town of Phillipsburg, Montana, but in visiting and investigating the town, they have one sheriff and his son is a deputy. I needed a larger sheriff department, so not to misrepresent Philipsburg, I changed the name to Frankenburg.

Basin Street, Basin, Montana

Recently I made a trip to Dunlap and Pikesville, Tennessee to see if the towns have changed since I was there in the 1990s. Boy was I glad I did, the towns were totally changed and a highway bypass was built. Pikesville was still a nice town, very quaint, downtown area, but it would have changed the dynamics of the story that I’m currently working on, so, based on my memory of the town before all the changes, I’m creating a town in Tennessee where my heroine lives.

Towns and cities are important to the story. Description of a small town can help readers get a feel for the kind of town and people that live in the town. But, for me, the towns need to be as realistic as possible. A small town in Montana is very different than a small town in Alabama. A mid-size town in New Mexico is different from a mid-size town in New York.

In my latest release, Love, A Second Time Around, a small town in South Dakota is different than a small town in North Dakota. As you will discover when reading the book.

As of this date, my publisher still has my book priced at 99 cents for the new release special. So you’ll want to go over and get your copy as soon as possible.

Love, A Second Time Around by Constance Bretes

They stole five years of his life. Now it’s time to settle the score.

Released from prison after serving five years for a crime he didn’t commit, Dr. Jon Stephenson is left with the task of rebuilding his veterinarian business, finding his son, and bringing those who wronged him to justice.

Not only had the love of Cat Morgan’s life been sent to prison, but prior to his arrest he had broken her heart. Needing a new start, she left town with Jon’s young son. Unknown to Jon, she was pregnant at the time. Now she’s a single mom to two young boys.

She never expected to see Jon again, and now that he’s shown up, demanding the opportunity to provide the father figure his sons need, she finds herself falling for him all over again. Actually, to be honest, she never stopped loving him. But will she ever be able to forgive his past indiscretions, and can they learn to trust each other again?

A Glass Of Wine Anyone? @ConstanceBretes #RomanceGems

I’m not a wine drinker, but I do enjoy festivities that have to do with wine. In Michigan, there are a lot of wineries, especially in the western part of the state. Every year, at the Ella Sharpe Museum in Jackson, Michigan, there is a wine and arts festival that features some of Michigan’s best wines, and artist exhibits. Visitors can sample wine and look at the creative artwork. It was at one of these festivals I discovered my ‘taste’ for wine tends to be of the fruity, sweet type instead of the dry type. My favorite is raspberry wine, with some dark chocolate. Oh YUM!

I also loved to visit St. Julian’s winery when it was on I-94 in Marshall, Michigan. They had great wine tasting opportunities there, as well as a great selection of wine at reasonable prices.
I haven’t been shopping in Alabama yet at the local wineries. However, I see there are plenty of places to go to and will definitely be visiting in the near future.

The idea came to me to write about wine today because my husband got a storage unit that had a nice wine rack to it. I had to claim it to put my wine in, and my chickens on it to guard the wine. I just love this wine rack. Looks pretty nifty, doesn’t it?

I have never used wine in my stories, but now as I think of it, all sorts of possibilities are popping into my head. Those ideas have prompted me to check out the local wineries here and start asking research questions for the next book I write! What a great ‘excuse’ to start wine testing again, huh?

Don’t forget to enter for a chance to win my book, Elkhorn In The Moonlight and other books that contains pets in their stories for the Dog Days of Summer monthly giveaway.

The search for stolen Sacred Arrows leads to much more.

Marcus Blackhawk is on a mission to locate the Sacred Arrows that were stolen from the Cheyenne Nation. When he learns that someone has seen the arrows he leaves immediately to track the person down and get more information.

Nicole Lancaster ekes out a living in a small town by helping her brother run a motel and working part-time in a restaurant. Her mundane life suddenly becomes more exciting when Marcus arrives in town asking about some arrows that she came upon years ago while hiking in the Elkhorn Mountains. The gorgeous man makes her heart beat fast, but she knows he’d never be interested in a Plain Jane like herself.

When Marcus offers Nicole a large sum of cash to lead him to the cave where she saw the arrows, she takes him up on the offer. After a three-day hiking trip through the mountains they locate the cave, but then the unthinkable happens, and they find themselves trapped inside. As they wait, hopeful they’ll be rescued, they give into the passion that’s been simmering between them.

Will help arrive in time to save them? And if so, can their night of passion ever be anything more? Marcus has no interest in an actual relationship, and Nicole wants the whole nine yards.

Am I a genius? @ConstanceBretes #RomanceGems

They say a messy office is a sign of a genius. I don’t know if that is the case or not, but it seems like I like living (and writing) in the midst of chaos. The desk is this picture looks a lot like my desk when I was working full time, and writing full time. It seems like I love to spend time searching through piles and piles of paperwork looking for one little sticky note. Gosh darn it, I know it’s in here somewhere!  😨

Right now, my office is in decent shape. But that will soon disappear. I have various projects I’m working on. The basket to the right of my monitor is where my cat, Sunny, sleeps when I’m writing. My drawer is open because, my cat, Tigger, opens it and climbs in it to sleep.

Currently I’m working on my new release, coming out this month, called Midnight Escape.  Release date is June 24, 2019.

On the run from the mob, Suzanne discovers that hunky Jax is just the man she needs.

Suzanne Pacheco is on the run from the mob after witnessing a murder and helping to put the killer in prison. Her trip across the country brings her to a small town in Alaska. But once again the mob’s hitman has tracked her down. She’s disheartened at the thought of leaving the town she’s developed a real fondness for, but there’s nothing else she can do. Until she finds help in the unlikeliest of places and embarks on an adventure like never before.

Commercial fisherman Jax Devereaux has his hands full fishing for crabs in the formidable Bering Sea, but when Suzanne needs his help, he adds yet another thing to his list of responsibilities. He takes her with him to the one place he thinks she might be safe—the middle of the sea. But there’s danger everywhere. Can he keep Suzanne safe, and will he lose his heart in the process?

I’m also working on a Common Elements Romance Project due out in October, 2019. A group of us authors are writing romance books that contains 5 common elements. Those common elements are:
-->a lightning storm
-->lost keys
-->a haunted house (really haunted or rumored to be)
-->a stack of thick books
-->a person named Max (which can be short for something)
My story, is The Haunted Love Affair, a contemporary romance with a bit of paranormal activity in it. A young woman becomes a housekeeper for the owner of a haunted house and falls in love with him.

I’m working on a military romance, Operation Code Name: Desert Love. The story of a Delta Force hero rescuing his love from insurgents in war torn Afghanistan.

How about this hunk for the hero? Swoon worthy and makes the heart pitter-patter, huh?

I recently submitted to my publisher, a story, Love, a Second Time Around and am waiting back to see if they accept the book. A contemporary romance about a hero who was sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit and the woman he loves.

I have a series I’ve started, Roadside Love, Roadside Passion, and Roadside Desire centered around the love life of three members of the Mansfield family.

I have a story called Moonlight Path, a young woman recently returning home and reconnecting with friends and her former love along with an unwanted secret love leaving her a white rose everyday on her front steps.

I’ve taken a respite for the past few months from writing, promoting, and only concentrating on editing projects to be released in the next few months due to my husband’s knee surgery and taking care of him. I’m very sure that once my schedule gets back on track, my desk will look like the first picture above, and I’ll be looking for slips of paper, folders, notebooks, and everything else I need to accomplish my goals.

Be sure to check out this month’s giveaway. Weddings is the theme. I have one of my books in the rafflecopter, Book of Love.

A librarian, a mechanic, and a psychotic ex. What could go wrong?

When her marriage came to a devastating end, Janice Meyers moved to Montana to try to escape her past and get a fresh start. She's sworn off men, but she didn't anticipate meeting Chris.

Coffee, tea, soda, water...#RomanceGems @ConstanceBretes

When I was working my 9 to 5 day job. The very first thing I ever did when I got into the office was head for the coffee break room for a fresh cup of coffee. Even if I had a meeting to go to, I always FIRST went to the coffee room. During the final 20 years of my work life, I drove an hour to and from work each day.
I would not fix myself a cup of coffee at home. I’d wait until I got to work, and reward myself for getting to work in one piece, safe, and sound by heading to the coffee room.

Now, as a writer full time, and retired state worker, my mornings consist of needing something to kick start my writing. This prompted me to ask, what do other writers do? What is their ‘must have’ kick to jump start their writing? So I put the question out to the Romance Gems authors, here’s what they say!
___________________________________________________________
I love to have my first cup of coffee in the morning at my desk. I can enjoy the coffee and look over my Day Planner to see what's on the agenda for the day and the rest of the week. Now, as to celebrating an accomplishment, I'm a bubbly girl. I always keep a bottle of either prosecco or champagne chilling in the fridge. ~ Joan Reeves, author of Heat Lightning.

My drink while I’m writing is coffee. Hot or iced, morning or night, it’s coffee:) Laura Hunsaker

I've never liked coffee but if the weather's warm, I do like a nice cold glass of iced tea while I'm writing! Kari Lemor

In the morning, I drink Bewley’s Irish Breakfast hot tea. Later in the day, I drink Cherry Dr Pepper. Caroline Clemmons

Definitely coffee with 2 cream for morning (2-3 cups). The rest of the day is ice water, usually w/lemon. If I write in the evening, it's Coke Zero or decaf coffee. Nancy Fraser, Author

My drink of choice is sweet tea. Always!!!
Kara O'Neal

Definitely coffee, then Diet Dr. Pepper, switching back and forth throughout the day. Karen Kelley

Yup, I'm you're writing twin. Morning writer, and must have coffee. I usually get only a few sips before needing to reheat it, though! I also keep chocolates nearby.  My waistline does NOT thank me for that habit.🙄😔😂  Elsa Kurt

I don’t drink coffee or tea. My “drug” of choice for a caffeine kick every morning is a big glass of Diet Mountain Dew. Most people gag when they hear that (!) but the caffeine jolt is what i need to clear my brain fog.  Peggy Jaeger

I drink Topo Chico mineral water.  My must have!
Karen Whiddon

I have a morning routine. I juice celery and drink a glass. Then when I sit down behind the computer, I like my cup of coffee. I may have two before getting up around noon. Jan Scarbrough

I have two cups of cappuccino in the morning (Europe kills the taste for regular joe). the second I’ll take into my office but it’s gone really fast. After that, it’s water. I don’t have sweet drinks or cola. At noon I’ll have another cappuccino but that’s it for caffeine for the day. Back to water.
Bonnie Edwards
 ________________________________________________________
Because I get up and do my writing/edits in the mornings, I must have a pot of coffee on. Some days I may only take a couple of sips before it goes cold, other days, when I’m frustrated or having a problem putting a scene together, I drink the whole cup and get more.

If I find some time in the afternoons and decide to write or edit, I usually have a can of Sprite to sip on while the devious plots form inside my head.

How about you? Do you need that quick picker-upper in the mornings or at the start of your day?

In honor of our Heroes and She-roes. I have a story that was published last year, called Jade's Redemption.

He's an overworked police chief, and she's a disgraced cop. Can he rescue her from her own depths of hell without losing his heart to her in the process?

Someone is kidnapping newborn infants and selling them to the highest bidder. Police Chief Patrick Carter has his hands full investigating the case. To complicate matters, he's short on staff.

Jade Harlowe has secrets, ones that she vowed no one would ever know. She used to be a police officer, but when a tragedy occurred—one that everyone held her responsible for—she resigned and moved to another state to start over, accepting a job as a dispatcher for the police, fire, and ambulance departments.

When Patrick discovers Jade's past police experience he offers her a job on the force. He needs help working the kidnapping cases, and Jade previously solved a similar case, so she could be a valuable asset. But will they be able to fight the attraction that's sizzling between them? Something that could be very distracting if they can't control it.

The clock is ticking. They have to find those babies and prevent more from being taken. But a very nosy news reporter may compromise everything if she digs deep enough to uncover Jade's past.

Neither Patrick nor Jade thought they had room for each other in their lives, but working so closely together makes it impossible to deny the chemistry. Can Patrick break through the wall Jade has built up around her, or will her past finally catch up with her and she loses everything once again?

Giveaways, are they worth the work? @ConstanceBretes #RomanceGems

Each month, I offer my subscribers a chance to enter a giveaway with anywhere from 4 authors to 14 authors giving away one of their romance only ebooks. I started doing this three years ago, and have found good success with it.

There are a couple of reasons I do this. It is a chance to help promote other authors and their romance genre and it provides an opportunity for me to be linked with other authors. So in essence, we are helping each other to promote our work.

I limit the giveaway to each author giving only one of their ebooks. The reason? Well, writing our books, it’s hard work. We have spent many days and hours holed up writing. It’s a lonely profession, and we authors do have to put food on the table just as every other American.

I have established some ‘rules’ over the three years in effort to improve the quality of the giveaway. My ‘rules’ are:
1.      Must be a romance ebook, any genre
2.      Quite a few of my subscribers are outside the US. Should offer an ebook in PDF, MOBI or EPUB. Paperbacks or hardcover books are an expense and you can offer it if you are willing to pay the postage to ship overseas or outside US.
3.      Help me to promote the books throughout the month. I used to promote to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Booktropolis, now I’m down to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
4.      The only requirement for entries are that they put their full name and email address in the giveaway. I don’t require things such as signing up for newsletters, following authors, etc. I keep the giveaway as just that…a giveaway.
5.      Authors must follow-up with winners to ensure the winners get their ebooks. Failure to do so will mean that the author will not be allowed in again.

In addition to putting the giveaway in my newsletter to my subscribers, I also place the newsletter on my website, with the rafflecopter in it so the general public can enter.

I average from 25 entries up to 200 entries each month. The Christmas holidays are the biggest for the giveaways.

In addition to other authors participating, I offer one of my books each month in the giveaway. This month, I’m offering Delayed Justice, my very first published romance.

So here are the two links:
https://www.constancebretes.com/news--things.html, my website for the current rafflecopter. Each book is listed with a blurb and the rafflecopter entry at the bottom.
http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/a1aff51a52/?, Direct link to the rafflecopter.

In this month's giveaway, (April Showers Romance Ebook Giveaway) my book, Delayed Justice, is being offered.

Can two former lovers set aside their differences and work together to bring a criminal to justice?

Five years ago, Sami Parker’s life was changed forever when she was injured in a bombing incident which left another young woman dead—a woman who happened to be the fiancée of Sheriff Makeeta Robertson, Sami’s former lover. Initially, Sami was a suspect in the crime, but the sheriff was forced to release her due to a lack of evidence. The town, convinced that she got away with murder, turned against her.

At last an arrest has been made and the sheriff needs Sami’s help to get a conviction, but can she trust him? Although wary and cautious, she wants to see this man brought to justice and wants to clear her own name once and for all. But the awakening feelings she has for Makeeta bring yet another problem. Then there’s the secret she’s kept for the last five years—one she may not be able to keep any longer, and one that may change the outcome of the trial.

Where Do We Store All The Information for our Stories? by @ConstanceBretes #Romance Gems

How do authors gather their information? Where do they keep it? I do things the old-fashioned way.

I have hundreds of lined & spiral bound paper notebooks that my husband accumulated during his storage unit hunts. For each book I write, I grab one of those notebooks, use it exclusively for that story and write down all the specific information about the characters in the book, including all the secondary characters. I keep that notebook by my side and when I add a new character, I record it in the notebook. I also keep in the notebook an outline of the story so I can refer back to it if I think I’m drifting away. If I travel long distance, I take my notebook with me, and sometimes, as scenes formulate in my mind, I will write it down. Other times, like if I’m in my favorite restaurant and a scene comes to me, I’ll use the “Notes” on my iPhone then transfer it to the notebook later. For Elkhorn in the Moonlight, my husband and I went to a ghost town and I took pictures of the old town and the mining shaft. We also stop along the highway in the town I lived in, to take pictures of the 1912 tunnel. Things like that get kept in a folder I create on my laptop.

I create a board in Pinterest, and have all the things I need for the story in that board for my visual. For Elkhorn in the Moonlight, I have the pictures I shared with you last month of the old tunnel and a ghost town with an old gold mine, pictures of Martin Sensmeier, and another unknown woman who play the main characters along with a little Native American boy who is the son in the story.

I create a folder for the book, and in the folder contains pertinent information I found on the web regarding ghost towns, old gold mines, rail tunnels and the town history. I also have books that I’ve purchase or gotten on loan from the library. After my romance book has been released, I file all the materials away in a file cabinet.

The biggest, thickest file I’ve ever created is for the new release coming out this summer, called Midnight Escape. This has 2 folders over 2 inches thick of material. Why do I need that much material? Have you seen the show, Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel? My story is based on an adventure in the Bering Sea on a crab fishing vessel. The hero is the owner and captain of the boat. The heroine, is on an adventure of the lifetime. Not having been on one of those boats in the middle of the Bering Sea, I needed to research, research, and research for that story. I had to learn everything about the vessel, the men who do this work, and the conditions they face. Deep sea fishing is one of the most hazardous jobs in the world.

Anyway, does my method of a story bible work for everyone? No. Are there better ways to deal with having your information at your fingertips? Probably. There are Bible Story programs available, and software such as Schrivner, that can help. But this works for me.

Information about my upcoming release, Midnight Escape will be coming later this spring or early summer, for now, I’ll share with you my current release, Elkhorn in the Moonlight.

Elkhorn In The Moonlight by @Constance Bretes #RomanceGems

Before I moved to Alabama last Spring, I lived in a tiny little town called Basin, in Montana. The population was about 250 people. I made some really nice friends there, and a few of my friends became my readers who enjoyed reading my romance books. They asked me if I’d consider writing a romance centered around a small town in Montana, like Basin.

Basin sits in a valley at 5,700 feet surrounded by mountains. Off to the north of Basin sits Boulder, Montana, and Elkhorn Mountains. Basin is also known as a miner’s town. At one point, there were three mines in operation, searching for gold and silver, and the town grew to over a thousand residents. When the mines dried up, it reduced the population, and left some empty buildings in its wake. Some of those empty buildings were at one time, considered brothels. The only things now operating in Basin, is a pizza place, a restaurant and bar, a post office, two radon mines and a grade school.

Rail Tunnel in Basin, Montana
In addition to all this, there is a railroad tunnel that went through Basin. The rail track actually at one point, came from Helena and traveled down to Butte. The rail tracks are long gone, but the tunnel remains. Not too far from Basin, is a ghost town called Comet. The pictures attached are the Comet mine, and the old tunnel that is in Basin.

Gold Mine in Comet, Montana
The story, Elkhorn In The Moonlight, was generated from this information. I changed the name of the town to Mason, and I added one more business to the town, a small motel, which I situated at the same location of what is now currently called Earth Angel Radon Mine. A few of the characters represented are some of the residents that lives there, including my husband and I, but all the names are different. The restaurant and bar, along with the pizza place, the post office and the school are in the story, as well as the three mines. Everything was renamed so to not put anyone on the spot or violate anyone’s privacy.

While I loved it in Basin, I had a serious problem with breathing and ended in the hospital in Helena, three times with hypoxia, and bronchitis. A few doctors felt that I had COPD and Asthma. The hospital, St. Peter’s, is in Helena, and also plays a part in my story. I received excellent one-on-one care there.

My favorite place to hang out was the Silver Saddle Bar and Restaurant, with the owner there. At the time of the writing of this book, Mr. Hale was still alive, but had since past away and it is now run by Gail, his wife. The bar and restaurant was a great place to hang out and meet your neighbors. They included us in their lives right from the get-go, and was always offering information, suggestions, or directions.

This book, Elkhorn In The Moonlight, is dedicated to my friends at Basin, Montana. Without them, the story would have never been written.
