CELEBRATING JUNE By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless

June was likely named for the Roman Goddess, Juno, patroness of marriage and well-being of women, so no wonder this month holds a special place in my heart.

Some of the things I love best about June, in no particular order are:

-Life feels less frantic.  This dates back to my own school days, and then my kids’ school years where, as June wound down, there was no jumping up and racing out the door five days a week.

-Evenings bring that magical, long-lasting twilight that makes it conducive to just hang outside and enjoy the evening stillness or watch the birds come for a final bath or feeding before bed.

-Local strawberries.  No explanation required.

-Flowers and fragrances are amazing.

-Farmers’ Markets.  Now my mouth is watering at the thought of garden-fresh treats.

-People seem friendlier.

-Street musicians pop up all over downtown street corners and at the markets.

-Summer clothes.  Can you say flip-flops?

-Barbeques and picnics.  Dining al fresco is my absolute favorite.

-Lazy days in the hammock with a good book.

I found this quote from Nathaniel Parker Willis that sums things up for me.

“It is the month of June,

The month of leaves and roses,

Where pleasant sights salute the eyes,

And pleasant scents the noses.”

What do you love best about June?

Just because it’s June, doesn’t mean I get to slack off.  In fact, I am releasing a brand-new book today.

ONE FANTASY FALL is a clean and wholesome contemporary romance that revisits Blue Sky Island, home to several other books in this series.  The hero, Blaze, is a Hollywood stuntman and Kaitlin’s ‘fake date’, who is reinventing himself after a failed stunt where he almost died.  Kaitlin is also reinventing herself, and despite teaming up for a worthy cause, she and Blaze both feel their lives are spinning them in opposite directions.

A couple of advance reviews: 5 * NEVER DARE A DAREDEVIL

“I enjoyed this straightforward, page-turning story with two people, neither looking for a relationship, brought together for an event as dates. The story has a great cast of people, plenty of angst and emotions, including a few surprises.”

5 * Sweet small town romance

“This is a sweet small town romance. I really liked it. It has wit and charm, and has great characters.”

Kaitlin started down the stairs, following the soothing sounds of a waterfall on the street level of the hotel where lush green plants ringed the mini-oasis. Water fell from a height of about twenty feet into a square, man-made pond that flowed beneath the tiled floor into a second pond directly behind her. The rocks edging the water looked real and she bent down to touch one.

“They’re real.”  Blaze spoke behind her. “Barnacles and all. I already checked.”

Kaitlin felt a warm flush tinge her cheeks as she slowly straightened.

He closed the distance between them and placed his finger beneath her chin. “Amazing,” he murmured. “I’ve never seen anyone blush quite so attractively as you do.”

Kaitlin met his gaze. “Blushing is a wretched nuisance.”

He gave a crooked smile as he released her. She wished he’d take a step back because her own feet refused to move and he was standing far too close for comfort. “I like it.  Lets me know you’re not quite as unruffled as you seem.”

Kaitlin felt a cold chill travel the length of her spine. “You don’t know me well enough to say that.”

His voice dropped an octave. “In some ways I feel as if I’ve known you forever, Kaitlin Ross. I understand your dreams, your goals, and your drive to succeed.”

She wasn’t sure if the rushing sound in her ears was due to the waterfall behind her or a defense mechanism for the way he was looking at her. She shivered as they exchanged looks, not one stranger to another, but something far more intimate. So powerful she could almost believe he meant what he said.

“Will you be at the tournament tomorrow?”

She nodded.  “I got a press pass so I can pretend to be busy and important.”

Blaze took her arm.  “Speaking of busy and important, we should get back to the party.”  He brushed her lips with his thumb smearing her lipstick and giving her hair a tousle.

“What are you doing?”

“Giving people a reason to speculate where we snuck off to together.  And why.”

She swallowed thickly, finding response impossible given the way her heart was fluttering in her throat.  Blaze was a little too good at this fake date stuff.  For a second there, it felt like he cared.

A WOMAN IS LIKE A ROSE... By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless

"A woman is like a rose...if you take good care of her, you will see love blossom.”  Anonymous

This quote certainly applies to all women: wives, friends, mothers, daughters, sisters, as well as sister authors.  As a blog group, the Gems are super supportive to each other and we are all blossoming.

In the world of roses, there are over 150 species and 1000’s of hybrids.  We don’t have quite that diversity among our Romance Gems, but we certainly boast authors who tackle every type of romantic encounter from Time Travelers and Rock Stars, to Cowboys, Older Women with Younger Men, Second Chance, Small Town, Romantic Comedy, Romantic Suspense, Regency, Mail Order Brides, Later in Life, Westerns, Wineries, the list goes on and on.  And that’s just in our talented little group.

Did you ever wonder why roses and romance are a perfect pairing?  White roses are one of the most popular as they represent unity and innocence of first love.  Oh, like some of our books.

No surprise that Red roses are all about passion, desire, and romance; traditional expressions of love.  Which explains the many red roses on book covers and in promotional images.

A Lavender rose symbolizes love or enchantment at first sight.  Yup, I’ve seen that on book covers too.

Because green is a color that is seen everywhere in nature, it’s no surprise that Green roses denote richness, fertility and abundance.

And then there’s the ultimate – the Burgundy rose is all about passion; deeper, more intense passion than even a red rose.

And speaking or red roses, I’m part of a promotion this month aimed at helping readers find new historical series in Kindle Unlimited.    https://books.bookfunnel.com/histrominku/390v3gbn2a

Then there was the gift I loved better than the hugest bouquet of roses.  Check out this rustic driftwood bench my children surprised me with one Mother’s Day.  The three of them dropped in, announced they were going to the beach down the road, came home with a load of driftwood and pulled out the tools!  Happy Mother’s Day to me!

Speaking of weddings and celebrations, I have two brand new releases later this month.  A BRIDE FOR SHANE is my Proxy Bride book that will celebrate its book birthday on the 18th.

Her brother’s bad boy best friend needs a wife.

A BRIDE FOR RILEY is part of the Mistaken Identity Brides series and joins the world of books on May 28th.

She’s on her way to the convent.  How does she wind up married instead?

Two releases in one month?  Why not.  After all it’s May, when Roses, Romance, and Mother’s Day are a natural fit.

Kathleen Lawless blames a misspent youth watching Rawhide, Maverick and Bonanza for her fascination with cowboys, which doesn’t stop her from creating a wide variety of interests and occupations for her many alpha male heroes.

Her hero, Steele, in HER UNDERCOVER COWBOY, is a modern-day cowboy, so when she was wooed by a man called Steel— while he’s not a cowboy, he is an alpha male and her forever hero.  Which is why all of her stories end Happily Ever After.

IT'S RAINING MEN! MY FAVORITE KIND OF APRIL SHOWERS. By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless

Back in my single days when my best friend said I needed a theme song, I chose “It’s Raining Men”.  Not because men were abundant in my part of the world where there are still eight single women to every single man. It was more like a plea and a belief in the power of positive thinking.

Something must have worked because after 80, I stopped counting how many first dates I went on.  Suffice to say, very few contenders made it to date three.  After all, a girl has her standards.  And you can tell a lot just by a man’s name before you even meet.  I went through a spate of Garys, Larrys and Barrys, and none of them were for me.  Luckily there were always book boyfriends.

These days, between my reading and writing it really does feel like it’s raining men.  With many of my own books having the name of the hero in the title, it’s not easy to come up with a new, yet suitable name for each of those hunks.  Plus, if I’m in a multi-author series, I have to make sure I’m not using the same name as one of the other authors.

I must confess, because I work on more than one book at a time most days, it’s not always easy to keep the men sorted.
Will is the ex-con.  Riley is the wealthy miner.  Shane is the bad-boy best friend of the heroine’s brother.  Denton is the sheriff.  Blaze is the stuntman.  Denby is the undercover investigator.  Then there’s my series with the seven brothers, where I gave each one a name beginning with B: Brody, Bradley, Braydon and so forth.  I liked the alliteration with Bride in the title, even though my editor worried my readers might get confused.  So far not a single complaint.  Phew!

What kind of name do you prefer your book boyfriend heroes have?  Do you like something different?  I mean, who could ever forget Roark in Shanna?  Or do you prefer a more formal name like Jonathan?  Personally, I like a name that rarely gets shortened, except perhaps by the heroine in a moment of intimacy.  Would it put you off reading a book if you didn’t like the hero’s name?  Cue back to my dating days.  More than likely it would for me.

This month, BRODY’S BRIDE is on sale for only 99 cents in a multi-author promotion of first-in-series historical romances.  Check it out on Bookfunnel.  You might just fall in love with your next book boyfriend.

No matter what the weather, as long as we have romance novels, it will always be raining men.  https://books.bookfunnel.com/histrom99c/ewt0st0z9n

There is also a promo of new historical releases from January to March.  Check here to see if you missed any favorites.     https://books.bookfunnel.com/histromnew2/fc2hrql36j

For now, stay dry and enjoy a good read.

LUCKY IN LOVE - IN HISTORY By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless #romancegems

Did you know that on this day in 1961, Barbie got lucky in love?  That’s right, March 11th, Ken was born with a full head of molded hair, sporting his trademark tan, sandals and swimming trunks.  Before long, he boasted a wardrobe of designer clothing.  Finally, Barbie had a mate!

I can relate.  Ten years ago this summer, I met my forever guy and we’ve been having fun ever since, sharing experiences, making memories and using every excuse to celebrate our good luck with love the second time around.

For a lot of us love doesn’t come easily, and that transfers to my characters.  I like to make them really suffer and angst—especially the heroes—as they deny their feelings, fight their attraction, and learn whatever life lessons they need to in order to form a forever union with their perfect match.

In Mail Order Martina, Will doesn’t want a wife and Martina doesn’t want a husband, yet they have no choice except to form a union and ultimately, together, beat the bad guys at their own game.  In one scene, Martina’s young half-brother Charlie, who stopped talking when their father died, takes a shine to Will.

Will listened with half an ear, the rest of his attention focused on Marty as she babbled to the young one, all the while wiping his hands and face with a face flannel.

Charlie didn’t take much to being cleaned up, his face screwed up in a comical way as he tried to evade her swipes with the rag.

“You’ve near abouts scrubbed all the skin off the poor little gaffer’s face,” Will said, leaning in close.  “Isn’t that right, Charlie?”

To his amazement, Charlie’s face near split in half with a huge, toothy grin.  Soft, plump baby hands grasped Will’s chin.

          “Wiw,” he said.

Will heard Marty catch her breath.  Her eyes flew to his.

“Did you hear that?” she said in soft, reverent tones.

“Uh, huh,” Will said, wondering what to do next.  With an instinct he hadn’t known he possessed, he scooped the boy from his seat and tossed him in the air the way he’d seen Marty do.  “Will sends Charlie high.  Right up to the moon and back.”

The youngster giggled and kicked his feet in delight.  When Will brought him back to eye level, the youngster reached out and touched Will’s face: his eyes and his nose, even his mouth.

          “Wiw,” he said again.

Marty rose and stood next to them.  “That’s right Charlie.  Will’s your big brother.  He’ll always take care of you and never let anything happen.”

Will jerked upright at her words and shoved Charlie into her arms.  “My track record as a big brother’s nothing to write home about.”

He saw Marty’s face fall, her delight at hearing Charlie speak again ruined by his clumsy words.

Saint Paddy’s day is around the corner, so if you’re looking for something fun, green and delicious to make, I include the recipe for an out-of-this-world breakfast pizza, a new favorite in our house that’s just as good the next day.

                   FLORENTINE BREAKFAST PIZZA

You need a deep Chicago-style pizza pan or regular pie pan, not a flat pizza pan.

I use frozen pizza dough that I roll out and blind bake at 450 for 6 minutes.  Or make your own.  Don’t skip the blind-baking step or you will have a soggy crust.

Note:  If you like a thinner crust, I have also used phyllo, again pre-baking before I add the filling.

Lower the oven heat to 400 degrees.

Filling 1 lb spinach – wilt spinach by placing in a large frying pan over medium-high with a little oil and tossing with tongs for 2 minutes.  Sprinkle with salt and set in a strainer until cool enough to touch.  Wring out excess liquid.

In a blender or food processor:

4 eggs, 1 cup ricotta cheese, Prepared spinach.  Blend for 2 minutes until frothy and increased in volume.

In your prepared, partially-cooked crust sprinkle 1 cup shredded mozzarella.  Slowly pour the egg mixture over top, being careful not to overflow your pan.  Thinly slice one large tomato (I use Roma) and scatter the slices overtop.  Bake for 20-30 minutes until filling is set.

This is easy to double and will feed 6-8 for a decadent brunch.

VALENTINE'S DAY--IT'S NOT JUST FOR LOVERS By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless #romancegems

Childhood Valentine Days still stick in my mind.  The excitement of going to school with my cards all addressed, then later bringing home that bursting envelope stuffed with Valentine’s cards from my classmates.  The excitement of seeing who sent me a sentimental greeting and guessing, hopefully, who might have snuck the anonymous ones into my collection when I wasn’t looking

Maybe that’s when I decided to write romance novels.  Or perhaps that experience set me up for future disappointments.  My husband turned out to be the world’s least romantic man (no surprise he’s been my ex for a long time) and Valentine’s day lost some of its magic.  The first year after my divorce, I booked a romantic booth for two in my favorite restaurant and waited for Mr. Right to show up and ask me on a Valentine’s date.  Alas, Cupid let me down.

As a single mom, that was the first of many a dateless Valentine’s.  Yet despite all those years when Cupid blatantly ignored me, I still felt it was important to celebrate.  I decorated the house, bought cards and chocolates for my loved ones—family and friends—and made sure my kids had lots of sweet treats.  One year I took heart-shaped sugar cookies with pink icing around to my customers.  I wanted to make sure all the important people in my life felt loved and special.

My efforts paid off, and I’ll never forget the year my youngest son, who was about eleven or twelve at the time, spent all his paper route money buying his sister and I each a long-stemmed red rose on Valentine’s Day.  He told his friends, “My Mom writes romance novels.  Valentine’s Day is bigger than Christmas in our house.”  He’s still that romantic guy, only now his girlfriend gets the flowers.

The point to all this is that love takes on many different guises, but it truly does make the world go round.  Why else would romance novels be the number best seller of all genre fiction?  Partnered or not, don’t wait for love to find you.  Go out and spread it around.  Make someone’s day special and yours will be too.  This year I plan to buy a bunch of cinnamon hearts, red and white heart-shaped jujubes, sweethearts and chocolate, and make up little goodie bags to drop off for friends I haven’t seen for way too long as we wait out the health order and receive our vaccine.

How will you spend February 14th?  Please share some ideas or your favorite Valentine’s memories below.  I’m always looking for inspiration.

Since there’s bound to be a slew of Valentine’s romances for sale this week, I’m going to hold off till the end of the month with my next release, ONE FANTASY FALL, quickly followed up with my latest Mail Order Bride Story MAIL ORDER MARTINA in early March.

Neither of them are marriage material—but fate decrees otherwise.

The train platform was empty, the train that had discharged Martina and Charlie in Colorado long gone from sight, and Martina fought down the hopeless feeling that had been with her daily since pa died.  When Charlie tugged at her skirt to be lifted up, she batted his hand away.  “Not now, Charlie, let me think.”

There had been no takers when she tried to sell the train ticket the unknown Will Thorn had sent to carry her from Harrisburg to Durango, and she wasn’t surprised.  Why would anyone want to come here?  By the time she sold her horse, and paid what she was sure was an inflated price for her and Charlie to stay in a rooming house, her finances were looking bleak, and she had little choice but to board the train.

Clearly, Aunt Florence had this planned as Pa lay ill.  Pretending to be Martina, her aunt corresponded with some pathetic, lonely rancher out in Colorado. And the mean old biddy’s scheme worked. Martina and Charlie were out of Aunt and Uncle’s lives forever.

While she was contemplating her next move, a porter came out of the station.  “Won’t be another train along till tomorrow, ma’am.”

Martina thought to the return address on the latest letter tucked into her reticule.  “How far is it to Ridgemont?”

“Ridgemont?  Not much there.  Someone expecting you?”

          “A Mr. Thorn,” she said.

“Which one?” the porter asked.  “The thief or the gambler?”

That sounded a bit dubious.  “Mr. William Thorn.  I understand he has a ranch.”

“Wouldn’t call it that,” the porter said, “although the place was something in its day.  Don’t tell me Will’s out of jail?”

“I—”  Marty swallowed thickly.  “There must be a mistake.”

“Just saw the ranch’s hand pass through town not long ago.  If he’s still around you can likely catch a ride with him.”

In an unexpected kind move, the porter picked up her valise in one hand and Charlie in the other.  “You both look pretty tuckered.  Let’s see if we can get you sorted out.”

Happy Heart Day, whatever you do,

Kathleen

YOUR OPINION MATTERS By Kathleen Lawless @kathleenlawless

As an author, I try to always keep my reader in mind as I work.  Will they like this character?  Will the storyline live up to the reader’s expectations and deliver the kind of feels they are looking for?

In a romance that’s the warm, fuzzy Awww!  In a mystery, it’s the mind puzzle. In a thriller it’s the heart-pounding, edge of the seat, nerve-jangling suspense and excitement.

Authors care about readers and their opinions.  What worked in this story?  What didn’t work?  What would you like to see more of?

That’s why it’s so important to leave a review of the books you enjoyed on either Amazon, Goodreads or Bookbub.  It doesn’t need to be a book report, and please don’t include spoilers or give away the ending.  A simple, ‘I really loved these characters and their story’ warms the author’s heart on those cold, lonely days when the words don’t flow and we wonder why we are even bothering.

The other reason reviews matter pertains to advertising.  Too few reviews, or a low ranking with reviews, can curtail an author’s bid for coveted advertising spots.  You might think advertisers will take any author’s advertising dollars, but that’s not always the case.  The platforms that deliver a good return on an author’s investment are really choosy about what they advertise to their followers.  There are far more authors clamoring to be seen than spots available.

Think about that, also, when you post your next review.  Did the book really deserve 1 star?  It doesn’t happen often, but I’ve been given 1 star because the reviewer didn’t like the subject matter or heat level, which is really unfair.  That one bad review drags down my average and well could prevent me from reaching readers who will enjoy the story.

A story that is poorly written, unreadable and full of typing and grammar mistakes might warrant 1 star, but I would opt to skip reviewing it all together.  I recently judged a contest of unpublished stories and most were really good, but there was one that I found problematic and difficult to follow.  I tried to be constructive and explain my reason for the lower scores.  To my surprise, the story obviously resonated with the other judges because it went on to the final round.  And I was glad.  Just because it wasn’t for me didn’t make it a bad story.  After all, judging, just like reviewing, is totally objective.

As many of us heard growing up, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”  It’s so easy to be negative.  But a few kind words about an author’s work really do go a long way.

To chase away the winter gloom, I’ll be releasing a new series of sweet contemporary romances soon, starting with ONE CINDERELLA SPRING.

Cindy clambered up the ladder, stretched up on tiptoe to replace the shoe box on the very top shelf, then inched her way back down and reached the floor with a semi graceful hop.

When she looked up, Prince Charming stood before her. She hadn’t heard him enter the shop over the drone of the electric fan that was doing its halfhearted best to stir the muggy air. He stood watching her, an admiring half smile on his face. He’d probably been looking up her skirt. Good thing she had her bike shorts underneath.

“Can I help you?” She glanced at the clock on the far wall. Why did people wait until five minutes before closing to wander in?

“If you can’t help me, then I am in big trouble,” he said with a disarming smile.

He could save the charm for someone who appreciated it. Someone who’d swoon at the lethal combination of linebacker shoulders, tousled dark hair, chiseled cheekbones and a killer smile. Rather than swoon, Cindy ran a hand through her haphazard tangle of wavy blond hair, which she kept short in hopes it would stay tidy.

“I’m on the hunt for a pair of shoes. For my sister,” he added.

“Anything in particular?” She noted that the sister line had been tagged in quickly. Lingerie shops or women’s shoes. Men didn’t seem to realize that Cindy didn’t much care if he was planning to wear the purchase himself, or if it really was for his sweetheart. The sister, though. That was a new twist.

He pulled a scrap of paper from his pocket. “She wants a pair of red leather pumps. Size eight, narrow. Do you have any?”

Cindy gave him a long, searching look before she spun around, so quickly she could feel her skirt flutter across her thighs. “Over here.”

There’d been a surge of interest in red pumps ever since she’d posted on the Madronna Beach Local Facebook page that she’d lost a shoe of the same description. Despite the flood of comments on the Cinderella’s dilemma post, the missing shoe had yet to surface.

And here’s a snippet from Madison’s story in ONE STOLEN SUMMER:

As Madison started down the rutted driveway toward the main residence, she noticed a swath of light through the front window. Must be the Hardy Boys. As she sauntered past the house, trying not to stare but hoping to catch a glimpse of the new residents, she let out a startled cry and fell headlong over something lying on the ground.

The porch light winked on seconds later, revealing that she had been tripped up by a miniature mountain bike lying in the middle of the driveway. A short, shadowy figure on the porch was staring in her direction as she clambered to her feet.

“Dad, someone’s trying to steal my bike.”

Madison dusted off her hands and knees and took a tentative step forward to make sure her limbs were in full working order. A much taller figure appeared behind the short one.

“I wasn’t stealing it,” Madison said. “But that’s a dumb spot to park it.”

“The lady’s right, son. Come and make sure she’s all right.” The man descended the three steps to ground level but even then, she had to crane her head to meet his gaze. Madison was five-foot-four, a fact she was reminded of by the man before her, who stood nearly a foot taller.

“I’m fine,” she said. “You’ve probably already figured out that I’m Coach’s daughter, Madison.”

“That was my first guess.” Her hand was swallowed up in a firm, masculine grip. “Greg Hardy. We were going to mosey over tomorrow and say hello. Contrary to appearances, my son knows better than to leave his bike lying around, don’t you, Ty?”

“Aw, Dad.”

“Move it or lose it,” Greg said. He had a nice voice, Madison noticed. Deep and sexy.

“I work nights at the pub down the road.”

“So Coach told me.”

Madison laughed, trying to cover up how suddenly awkward she felt. “He kept referring to you as the Hardy Boys. After my favorite teenage detective books,” she added.

“I know who the Hardy Boys are.” His voice was dry. They could have been discussing the weather. Because the light was behind him, she couldn’t tell much about his looks beyond his height. Dark hair. Broad shoulders. Great voice. Hunky Hardy.

“Sorry about my bike, ma’am.” Hunky’s son stooped to pick up his bike. When he turned sideways, the light fell across his face and Madison felt her insides give a lurch. The little boy from the party today was living here. The one who wished his father wasn’t so sad.

I spend a lot of time in the Wild West writing about cowboys, so it's always fun to mix things up a little.  Do you read across a variety of genres or mostly stick to one time period and setting?
