For the Love of Cats by May Williams

At the risk of sounding like a stock character in a British drama, I love cats, drinking tea, and my garden. Today, I want to talk about my collection of kitties. There have been many cats in my life beginning with my childhood pet, Ginger. I can hardly remember what she looked like now, but I still know the name. Later, there was Mick, a house cat who was so large he was mistaken for a panther. (Not that we have panthers in my part of the country, but Mick was sighted near an elementary school and caused a few minutes of panic before getting a ride home in a police cruiser.)

Jasmine

I currently have two housecats: Jasmine (aka Bubbles) and Misha. Jasmine is 15 years old and rules the household. Note her queenly look. She allows us to pet her on her terms only. Misha is far more friendly, but a classic scaredy cat. If anyone visits, she disappears. Recently, my son was running power tools in the house. Misha, who is not a little cat, wormed her way under the treadmill and didn’t reappear for hours.

Outside, we have five strays that we feed. They come twice a day for meals and will scratch at the backdoor if we’re running late. They like to sun themselves on the deck, but we don’t get to pet them often. Still, seeing them makes me happy when I get home from work (even if that makes me a crazy cat lady).

Not done yet…Yes, that's right, there are more cats in my life.

My daughter came home from college this week bringing her two cats to add to the mix for the summer. Alice is a beautiful tortoise shell with a lovely personality. She snuggles up next to me on the couch and likes to be held. Her companion, Squeak, is unlike any cat I’ve ever seen. She plays constantly

Squeak
(while making a squeaky noise, hence, the name) and never sleeps for more than a half hour at a time. In a lot of ways, Squeak is like a toddler, constantly moving and getting into things and so much fun. She can't resist pouncing on my desk when I'm writing and playing Godzilla.

Recently, I was out shopping and came across these gems. I couldn't resist cat sneakers. They make me laugh and they're so comfortable. What could be better?

For as much as I love cats, they rarely make it into my novels. I’ve written about dogs and horses. I think my next novel is going to contain a wonderful cat who brings my hero and heroine together.

I'd love to hear about the special cats (or dogs) in your life.🐱

  1. One of my good friends got the cat sneakers too. I think she found dog ones also. My two kitties(twins)with opposite personalities have passed on. My husband is not a cat person, but I'm still hoping. Here's to a cat in your next book.😼

  2. I'm a cat lady, too, although all three of mine are outside now. I usually have at least one in a story. The one I'm working on now has two--Ishmael and Hagar--and they've been fun! I loved reading about yours.

  3. My daughter has a Maine Coon and he is so big they named him Moose. At one time the neighbors got nervous and thought there was some sort of bobcat roaming the neighborhood.

  4. I'd love to find a pair of sneakers like yours for our daughter! We have two indoor cats, Jasmine and Sebastian. Like you, we feed several outdoor cats, one of which lives in our garden shed. We also feed squirrels, a possum, and the occasional raccoon or fox. I love cats, but for years thought I was allergic to them. Actually, when they stay indoors, I'm not. It was the pollens they carried from going through grasses and weeds. Sebastian is a tuxedo cat and my constant companion. Jasmine is a longhaired Rag Doll and very shy. Both cats and our little dog are rescues. Our daughter has a Maine Coon that is very large. He has adopted her smallest cat.

  5. I'm a cat lover. Currently down to two. Both of mine are Tuxedos named Tux and Beau. Tux is my scaredy Cat. Beau is fearless. He bounces off walls, wakes me up every morning if I oversleep, and plays all day with my dog. Cats rule!

  7. So, don't get mad, but I'm a dog person, and we have a sheltie! She's a sweetie and a PRINCESS. We love her!

  8. My daughter brought 2 cats home from college. She became a vet and has 3 of her own now. My husband only allows 1 cat. She's always in my face at the computer.

  9. We have Oscar who is 15 and the best boy. He’s a handsome orange tabby auth long hair and a white tip on his tail. But we also have a standard poodle. We’ve always had a cat and a dog...they create a lot of fun between them.

  10. How sweet it this post, May?!! I love cats too - all creatures actually - but I'm allergic. With three crazy dogs already, that's probably a good thing. :D Yet that's never stopped me from having great cats in my books! So I definitely think you should share your pets with your readers.

  11. Cute names for your kitties. Since I have a son and a daughter who are VERY allergic to cats, we've always been dog people—poodles or poodle blends specifically. No matter whether you're a cat or dog person, pets enrich your life.
