REVERSE WHAT? @kathleenlawless, #romancegems, #kaelysteel

Would women today really want more than one man in their life at the same time?  Likely not, but they sure seem to enjoy reading about it and writing about it. And if each hot male serves a different purpose, meets a different need…. Being adored and worshiped by more than one man actually sounds quite fun.

Reverse Harem is currently rocking the charts as a hot new sub-genre within the romance world. The notion being if one man is good, more than one must be better.

It’s an interesting concept, so when a fellow romance author threw down the gauntlet and challenged me to try my hand, I ran with it. I chose a different pen name because the genre has a distinct following and some of my readers may not enjoy embrace the idea. Many of the books written include a relationship between two or more men in the harem, which is not what I want to write. I make it all about my heroine. She is the star. The guys are the supporting actors.

The project proved to be more difficult than I originally thought. A lot of these books are set in the paranormal world, which makes it easier to suspend disbelief.  But I’m an in-the-moment kind of gal, so I decided to write a contemporary setting for my five hotties, whom I call the G Force Five, and the woman who desperately needs their protection, whether she knows it or not.

The resulting G Force stories are short, sexy novellas, about half the length of a normal book. I did a series of three because I needed that much room to learn about the men, to watch them grow, to let them surprise me as well as the reader, and see how they interact with the lady. And of course, because I like my heroes to suffer, I gave them lots of baggage to overcome on their journey.

  1. Kathleen, I love the idea of reverse harem and tortured heroes. I also think a male harem would be great as long as they were cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry. I've done a number of F/F/M stories. Maybe some day I'll be brave enough to flip it!

    1. It was a fun challenge, finding a different voice. And you bet one of them cooks!

  2. The beauty of reading is traveling to another reality and live someone else's life. In real world, I can't even find one man worthy of my love, let alone five! (But I do have lots of book boyfriends!)

You sparked my curiosity, I'll give it a try! Thank you!

  3. Sounds like the bachorlette revved up! I'll take the Fantasy Suite for 5. Yes, count me in. I have to read this one and see how it works. It's on my kindle now. Thank you.

    1. Thanks Nora. I snuck in a HEA so I got a bit of flack from a few readers, but that's what I do.

  4. I agree with Nancy, I want my harem of men doing all my household chores, along with a few other things! Thanks for the heads up on the free book. Grabbed it already!

  5. Definitely, Kari. The queen does not lift a finger with household drudgery. They are there to serve and protect.

  6. I'll admit, this is a romance sub-genre that I have yet to explore. Thank you for shedding some light on it.

  7. Admittedly it's not for everyone. But it's nice that the readers have a choice.

I've read reverse harems (before it even became a trendy thing) and the author got so much flack for it. Now, it's been embraced by the reading community. Go figure. :P

  14. I read about Reverse Harem in K-Lytics I think. Made me wonder who renamed menage as Reverse Harem. *LOL* Whoever did it was a smart marketing pro. Good luck with Kaely Steel.
