Many of you know I’ve been traveling in an RV the last
five months with my husband. (If you didn’t know, check out my Instagram to see
all the places we’ve been). We’ve seen
some really cool stuff and done exciting things! Part of the reason we went on
this trip was to find a winter home. While living in New England has been a
wonderful experience for us, we’ve gotten old and grouchy and really don’t like
the cold or shoveling anymore.
Bridge of Lions
I had never thought of myself as a Florida person – my
hair is too prone to frizz in the humid weather, but another southern place
would be fine. Until we happened upon St. Augustine in mid-December. We absolutely
fell in love with the town. Rich in history. Gorgeous architecture. Beaches.
Shops. And the temperature in the winter was warm without being too hot. At the
northeastern part of the state, it seemed ideal.
After touring the rest of Florida, Mississippi, New Orleans and then exploring the Bayous of Louisiana, we
decided to go back to St. Augustine and check out real estate. Wow! Better than
the prices in New England. But we didn’t want to make a rash decision. So we
found this adorable apartment to rent. It’s over a hundred years old, was one
of the original hospitals in town, and it’s on the beautiful Matanzas River (near
where it empties into the ocean) a few steps from the Bridge of Lions. Sold! Or
rented!
And as much as traveling was quite an adventure, I
have to admit I’m ready to be in one place for a while. Ready to get back to a regular writing schedule that didn't get interrupted by driving to the next exciting place. Here’s a few things I’m looking forward to:
A REAL shower where I can stand up and don’t have to
hold the nozzle or the water doesn't run out! And an actual flush
toilet!! Woo hoo! That’s cause for celebration!
And I now have a full kitchen. It’s not huge but when
compared to a stove and small sink next to the living room couch, yup, I’m
stoked!!
Some might say it’s too bad my adventure has ended.
But for me, this new amazing town, and the rich history and life here, plus being a full time author now, could be
the beginning of a brand-new adventure!
Let it begin!

I'm gonna miss you six months of the year, my friend!!!
ReplyDeleteI'll miss you too but we'll have to make sure to spend lots of time together when I'm in NH!
DeleteYour new place looks adorable. Hope you keep us up to date on your new adventures in St. Augustine. Happy writing in a new inspirational warm snowless home.
ReplyDeleteThanks! You can't beat the location. Hoping it will be very inspirational!!
DeleteSounds wonderful!
ReplyDeleteLet's hope! The weather certainly is far better than the constant snow my children report from New England!
ReplyDeleteAdmire your adventurous spirit. Look forward to living vicariously through your new adventures.
ReplyDeleteThe adventurous spirit is new. Guess it comes with age when you start not giving a crap about what some people think is important. #livelifenow
DeleteI'm getting to the age when "no winter" sounds great and St. Augustine sounds like the perfect place. Hopefully you'll be within shouting distance of an RWA chapter as well.
ReplyDeleteI already went to my first meeting!! First Coast Romance Writers! Met the lovely Sarah MacLean ( who was the workshop presenter) and had lunch with her too! Great bunch of writers!!
ReplyDeleteOooh! Awesome!
DeleteSo excited for you, Kari! It looks like a beautiful place to settle down for awhile.
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous!! And the history and architecture are amazing!!

ReplyDeleteOoh that's awesome that you guys did that! I always loved the idea of mobile homes like a revamped airstream or a tiny home on wheels! But alas, the compost toilet and non-luxury shower is not for me.
Here's to new (and warmer) adventures in St. Augustine!
Hey thanks!! It certainly was an adventure! Not sure I'd do it again for this length of time but for short periods, maybe. I am enjoying my new, much larger shower!! And I keep forgetting it's winter until my children send me a picture of their yards covered in snow.
DeleteI understand the need to live in a warm city - I live in Brazil. Weather is perfect here.
ReplyDeleteAnd your bathroom is PERFECT!
I miss your beanie baby fox pics!

Ahhh, Sly sends his love! I will have to take a few of the new place with him in them.
DeleteYesssss, I love stuffed animals. I take pics of them when I travel, I think it's cute and creative!
DeleteSounds like the beginning of a whole new adventure.
ReplyDeletemarypres(AT)gmail(DOT)com
I certainly hope so! A GOOD adventure!
DeleteWe have friends who travel using their RV for half the year. They are always glad to return home.

It is nice to have a place that doesn't bounce when you walk around in it. And to be able to stretch out is very nice!
DeleteThe new place looks great! Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteMsredk at AOL dot com
Thanks! It still needs some touches to make it home but it'll do for now.
DeleteThe "writer on the road" is parked - I LOVE it! And I love St. Augustine, great choice! So, you live in an old hospital with a cemetery across the street? Humm... My kinda spot. *wink* Can't wait to hear all about your adventures when you're back this way. Enjoy the warmth and sunshine!
ReplyDeleteHee hee, Kathryn, I did think of you with all this place is. But so far, fingers crossed, I haven't run into any spiritual beings, and honestly don't wish to. If they stay quiet and don't bother me, I am happy to share the space.
ReplyDeleteKari, I'm looking forward to hearing about your new adventure in beautiful St. Augustine. Congratulations on parking the RV, at least for a while. *G* I know you're enjoying the "real" kitchen and bath.
