Why Every Writer Should Own a Dog By Connie Vines

Gertrude Stein claimed the water-drinking patterns of her dog, named Basket, taught her the difference between sentences and paragraphs in writing.

Steven King’s dog was banned from Pet Co.

I laughed when I read Steven King’s tweet and looked at the photo of his unrepentant dog.  Every dog owner has ‘been there’.

Dogs are wonderful companions, the perfect literary critic, and teach us about love, loss, relationships, and how to live each moment of life in joyful abandonment.

I look at my own relationship with the dogs who have touched by life.  Several AKC pedigree pets:  Jacques, my miniature black poodle, from my childhood and my constant companion.  Inca, my basenji whose yodel (they do not bark) unnerved the neighbors. Justine, my rescued greyhound, who was the ‘mommy’ assistant for my two young sons.

More recently my dogs have been lost or re-homed.  Buddy a little chiweenie (chihuahua and dachshund) who passed away at the age of 10 years. And my current ‘sweet-heart’, Chanel, a toy poodle-mix.

If you aren’t a pet owner, you may not understand the bond.  However, if you have a dog, oh the stories you can, and will, tell!

What better way to share the joy of a living with such a treasured soul than to her/he leave paw-prints on the hearts of your readers?

Jacques would steal a biscuit from the table and hide it between the couch cushions. If you left your bathwater unattended, he would jump into the tub for a swim.

Justine, sounded like a horse when she ran (hooves on packed earth), spent most of her time resting on the living room love-seat.  She wore a hat and sunglasses when we went for walks. She tattled on my child and stacked boxes of Rice-a-Roni in the living room.

Buddy was my husband’s side-kick and had a snarky-personality (but we loved him anyway).
Chanel, is a sweetie and loves to wear a sweater in the winter and play in the rain.  She’s likes to talk to her humans.  She wants a hug before bed time and kiss on the head when she wakes up.

How do you feel about pets in the stories you read?

What is your fondest memory of your pet?

What does your pet do that makes you nuts?

What is/was your favorite pet?

Happy Reading,

Connie

  1. Dogs are so much fun to own. Though sometimes frustrating. I like animals in stories and frequently put them in mine. We owned a greyhound. I thought she was perfect until my daughter stayed home sick one day (not a little kid) and reported that as soon as my car left the drive, our perfect dog ran upstairs to enjoy her day on my bed where she wasn't allowed. When she heard me come home, she'd jump off and innocently greet me at the door. She also loved too race around the outside of the house while we yelled, Go. Go. She had formerly raced at a track. if we had company she ran even faster. A true racer at heart. She was sweet and loving. We still miss her. Your dogs sound like so much fun, Connie. Enjoy. Love the pics too.

  2. Love your blog about our pets. In my current release, Elkhorn in the Moonlight, my heroine has a blue heeler who goes with her where ever she goes. I love using pets in my stories.

  3. I always put my pets in stories...from my rescued cats to my big Red dog to my little corgis. In Kentucky Rain, the hero is a cat lover. LOL! My own husband, not so much!

  4. I usually have pets in stories. I am a cat person and always have cats, but in my books, I tend to have both.

  5. I've put pets in several of my stories. I had a Springer Spaniel named Freckles growing up and she was the best dog. So in one of my stories, the dog's name is Freckles and...you guessed it, she's a Springer.
I also just finished a book where the heroine was never allowed to have a pet while growing up, so the hero takes her to get a rescue dog, which she does, but she also ends up with three black kittens. I had readers help me name them. I ended up with Snap, Crackle, and Pop.

  6. I grew up in a no-pets-allowed household.
I used to be so afraid of dogs as a kid/youth.

But ever since I saw Bluto, I FELL IN LOVE.
Too bad he belongs to someone else. :(

Also, places I've rented from seem to hate pets.
I'm hoping I'll be able to get my first dog in a year. <3

  9. I love animals in stories. Dogs are amazing and so instinctive. They know when we are sad and come to cheer us. They are more than willing to share in our joy as well.
