Giveaway Alert: Check the end of the post for my Giveaway.
I've thought a lot about her bold confession because there are a few things I'd like to kick.
Unfortunately, I'm one of those people who usually refuses to admit defeat.
However, this week I reached the point where I'm ready to kick a few things out of my life.
In fact, I'm making an entire list of things I'm kicking. Ready? Here we go.
1. Kale
Yep. I absolutely refuse to eat any more kale. I don't care how good it's supposed to be for the human body. I don't like it. I eat plenty of other green veggies so I'm okay with giving up on kale which is showing up in far too many convenience foods and restaurant items.
2. Cauliflower posing as rice or pizza crust.
Who thought this one up? I like raw cauliflower in salads, but I do not like cauliflower that pretends to be rice. It's not. In fact, it's an insult to rice. And as a pizza crust? Gag! If I can't have a real pizza crust, I won't eat pizza. (I wish people would warn me in advance when I'm invited to a casual dinner with pizza as the main item only to discover it's cauliflower crust.)
3. Books labeled romance that have an unhappy ending.
Don't get me started! Not naming any names, but, come on! A romance has to have at least a happy for now ending—which I really don't like but will grudgingly accept if the rest of the book was a really good read. I'm going to become one of those readers who flips to the end of the book.
4. Getting upset over media talking heads who demean the romance genre.
Why? Because it's written mostly by women, for women? Get lost you who describe stories of love, relationships, and commitment as bodice rippers, housewife porn, smutty books, sleazy novels, or "those" books *wink, wink*.
Yep. I've always done it. Why? Because I wanted to keep a watchful eye on that magic number so I'd always be that weight.
What a silly habit. After all this time, that number isn't important. What's important is feeling good and eating well which I do. So I gain a few pounds? So what?
6. Writing until late at night.
When I do this, my brain is so full of the plot and character that I can't sleep, yet I'm too tired to continue. I hereby quit that.
7. Doritos Nacho Cheese chips
*Sob* I'll miss those orange-tinted fingertips. Doritos is the first of many food guilty pleasures I'm quitting this year.
8. Making unrealistic daily to-do lists.
I'll still make a list, but I'll make sure the number of items on it is in touch with reality.
9. Postponing my writing until I "feel better."
There are so many demands on my time—volunteer work, Romance Gems, 2 other group blogs to which I belong, my chronic-pain daughter, my sick brothers, my hubby, 2 houses, etc.—that I'm tired all the time.
Too many days a week, I look at my office and say, "I'll write first thing in the morning." Unfortunately, morning usually brings the crisis of the day before 8am.
I'm now setting my bedtime alarm/wake up alarm so I have 8 hours of sleep and get to my office shortly after I awake in the morning.
10. The clothes in my closet that I'll never wear again.
Yep. Cleaned out my closet this week and donated several suits, blazers, dressy clothes, etc. for which I have no use.
What's In Your List?
I could list a bunch of other things I'm quitting, but I want to hear what you're quitting.
What's on your list of things to quit or give up?

I’ve been doing okay with my resolutions except for writing more. Sigh...but I’ve never added kale to my diet so that’s an easy one...ditch it! Anything that is that tough to chew is out...I tried it, felt like I was chewing a cud and quickly gave it up. LOL
ReplyDeleteLOL. Yes, I guess it is like chewing a cud.
DeleteA great list. My thing I'm kicking is beating myself up over my shortcomings. They're still there, but for the most part, I like them.
ReplyDeleteYes, that's on my master list of things to kick in 2020. Life is just too short to make yourself miserable.
DeleteLove this list! I couldn't agree more about cauliflower...actually pretty much couldn't agree more about your whole list. Good for you! I shall follow suit!
ReplyDeleteHey, Nan. Actually, I used to like cauliflower...until it started appearing in every food product known to man. I'm surprised they're not making ice cream with it!
DeleteNancy, did you want to leave your email for my Giveaway?
DeleteGreat list!! Like Bonnie, I never ate kale so no need to get rid of it. I gave up weighing myself a few years ago. Lost cause. I do make daily lists but always make sure they are attainable. When we downsized last year, I got rid of tons of stuff I haven't worn or used in years. My focus this year is on more writing and all that goes with it.
ReplyDeleteI'm cleaning out the clutter in 2 houses and plan to sell both this year. Will be buying a smaller 1 story I hope but in a gated community like where we live now.
DeleteI, too, really don't want to eat cauliflower that is masquerading as anything but itself. Why ruin a perfectly good pizza? email: stephaniesuesansmith at gmail.com
ReplyDeleteHey, Stephanie! Maybe I should start a "back to real food" movement?
DeletePractical list. I used to make to do ones but stopped when I'd feel guilty over not doing everything. Now I'm just trying the take it and decide as I see it technique.
ReplyDeleteI'm just cutting my to-do list down to reality. I packed away my Super Woman cape and gave it to Goodwill.
DeleteGreat list! I have found a palatable way to 'enjoy' kale occasionally. Cauliflower pizza shouldn't even be in the same sentence.
ReplyDelete*LOL* I agree that caulifower and pizza shouldn't be combined even in a sentence or in any recipe.
DeleteI enjoyed your list. I still do weight myself everyday. It allows me to check myself before I get out of hand. lol I love, love, love the one of cleaning out your closet. This my next chore when I get enough nerve.
ReplyDeleteDo what works for you, Judy Ann. Good luck with getting that closet cleaned.
DeleteGreat list! I would have to say I would love to stop getting on the scale. I might try that.
ReplyDeleteIt's very freeing. I hadn't realized how it affected my mood every morning.
DeleteI use the excuse I'll write when I feel better, too. I suffer from Arthritis and Carpel Tunnel syndrome. I have found, however, that Google Docs has a voice typing feature so I guess I don't have that excuse any more.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why it has me as unknown, but my e-mail is Pammie918@aol.com.
DeleteGot you, Pammie, in My Giveaway. Possible reasons it shows you as Unknown: when I click on Unknown, which is a hot link, I get this message, "The Blogger Profile you requested cannot be displayed. Many Blogger users have not yet elected to publicly share their Profile.

I'm a celiac and can't enjoy real pizza crust but I still refuse to try cauliflower pizza crust - it just isn't right no matter how many people try to convince me otherwise! You are smart to steer away if you can enjoy the real thing. I quit weighing myself years ago when I found out I had two auto-immune diseases concerning my thyroid. I quickly realized my weight will do what it wants based on what my T3, T4 and TSH levels are doing so trying to stay at what I was just wasn't feasible when it wasn't about the foods I was consuming and the exercise I was getting. I hope to quit my day job this year but that's more about what I plan on moving to, not what I'm leaving behind. I focus on what's ahead. It's a slight shift in perspective but it works better for me and I never feel like I need to rail against 'the machine'. Thanks for sharing your list though, it's cool to see you taking a stand and creating healthy boundaries for how you wish to move forward with your life! shelleyabaileyattelus.net
ReplyDeleteVery smart, Shelley. I have low-thyroid so I know what you mean. I love your attitude about "what you're going to" rather than what you're leaving behind. I know you'll be successful and make the most of what you're moving to. Got you entered in the giveaway.
DeleteThere are a few authors I will never read again because their books have sad endings about half the time. Realistic? Maybe. Why do I read romance? To feel happy while I'm being entertained. Goodbye sucky endings!
ReplyDeleteYes, why read depressing books when we're already living too many of those situations. I think a romance novel that deals with the real life issues and shows the heroine confront and resolving her issues AND finding love from a guy who understands and supports her is just as meaningful as some of the so-called realistic books.
DeleteNumber 3, yes. YES!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Totally.
DeleteI just absolutely love this list. Such wisdom here! And you have to be of a certain age to know yourself this well! One thing I've done for more than 20 years years now is sort of like your new "write first" is my "exercise first" because if you put if off, it just doesn't get done. Everything else comes first.
ReplyDeleteI once had the wonderful habit of rolling out of bed, put on the exercise clothes, and hit the pavement for a 2 mile brisk walk. Then home, stretching, work out with light weights, shower, breakfast, and go to my office. That's been disrupted by the last few years, but I'm determined to build that habit again.
DeleteThere were 3 entries for the lovely Writing Journal in my Giveaway. Congratulations to the winner, Stephanie Suesan Smith!
