Canning Lids? by Lucinda Race #RomanceGems

 Hello again,

With all odd things happening in our world I’ve discovered canning lids are in scarce. With the approach of fall I like to can applesauce, tomatoe sauce  and maybe make jam or relish. So off I go to the first store to purchase lids. Nowhere to be found. I asked the check-out clerk and she smiled. Sorry, we’re out of those. You can try back next week.

Not a big deal. Stopped at the hardware store, and another and the grocery stores all with the same luck. I came home empty handed. So, I go online. I will not pay those kinds of prices. It was like trying to buy other items earlier in the year. Remember toilet paper?

I’ve concluded I’m going to have to plug in my spare freezer and spend the extra money on electricity to preserve the harvest from our garden and yes, my homemade applesauce.  I’m not complaining but it is easier to pull a jar of applesauce from the shelf for dinner than think ahead and defrost one. But for the taste of fall, it’ll be worth it.

In book news – I’ve sent the first book in The Crescent Lake Series, Blush, to my editor for her review. But a funny thing happened when she received the email. She emailed me suggesting I switch the name of my town and winery. Apparently a somewhat famous horror movie franchise was based at Camp Crystal Lake. Not being a fan of anything horror I had no idea. So, I needed to think of a new town and winery name with the same roll-off-the-tongue sound. Thanks to other writers and avid readers Crescent Lake was born. I’m still on track for a projected release of January 2021.

If you’d like to keep up with more news join my newsletter subscribers. Each month I give away something, books in print or e-books and swag.  Coming in December I’m going to release to my newsletter people the prequel to the Crescent Lake Series, Vines. You won’t want to miss it.

Until next month,

Be happy and stay healthy,

Lucinda

  1. I make apple butter every summer. I give most of it away, because I can't eat all of it myself. (My family doesn't like it, which is sad!) I love to make it from scratch. It's so much fun.

  2. With so many trying new recipes and growing vegetable this year it makes sense canning supplies would be in high demand. You’re lucky to have the freezer to use!

  3. So great that you do all that wonderful cooking and canning. Yummy!

  4. I never thought to load up on canning lids last spring. I make a cucumber relish using my mom's recipe she used when I was a kid. My sister couldn't find paper towels for love or money last week. What next?

  5. I'm so glad my son and I both stocked up a couple months ago. The local hardware store had a sale on jars in the smaller 250 ml size I like for myself. My son got the larger pint and quart jars. And ... for whatever reason (call me psychic), I suggested we both get some extra lid inserts. Now, I'm glad I did b/c they're nowhere to be found here either.

  6. Many people are being forced to freeze produce they'd planned to can. One friend bought some paraffin, but I never liked working with the wax. I'm looking forward to BLUSH.

  7. I needed a new bamboo stalk for my pet frogs' little tank. Normally when you walk into the grocery store they have a flower and plant section with lots of bamboo plants. I went to several stores and couldn't find any. I finally asked a clerk and he said there's a bamboo shortage, of all things!

  8. SO cool that you're into preserving your garden that way! I've never tried canning. Crazy what's in short supply this year. I'm even thinking of purchasing my next-year seed starting stuff, etc. now, or as soon as I find it. Best of luck with Blush!

  9. With so many people gardening this year, canning supplies are gone. A friend who wanted to try canning her peaches found no jars, let alone lids. And the jars online were at least 5 times the normal price.

  10. The strangest things are short, aren't they? I'm finding myself hoarding pumpkin.

  11. It's interesting how COVID has inspired so many to go back to the arts and crafts of the past. Canning, bread making, cooking, and even sewing are thriving again. Congratulations on your quick thinking and coming up with another great title for your series.
