Highfield Hall and Gardens, Falmouth, Massachusetts, Jan. 2020 |
I get around. *chuckle* Ask anyone who knows me, and they’ll tell you I’m always crying, “Road trip!” Big cities, tiny towns, especially historic locations. One of my favorite things about being a writer is the inspiration I gather from the many places I explore. Is it Wanderlust, a popular term, meaning a strong longing for or impulse toward wandering? That’s exactly what it is. But I say, “adventuring.” And whether I’m alone, with friends, or with family, I LOVE adventuring! I reside in New England and hitting the road in my old Honda CRV is my favorite way to see this diverse and beautiful region. So, come along. First stop, Cape Cod, Massachusetts!

Even in winter, Highfield Hall and Gardens is an enchanting and inspiring location. The mansion itself - a Queen Anne stick-style Victorian built in 1878 - so sparked my imagination it launched my debut novel and a book series. I discovered it by chance over a decade ago, yet one visit changed the course of my life.

When I was in high school--or younger--I read a book by Betty Cavanna called PAINTBOX SUMMER. I have wanted to visit the cape ever since, but haven't even made it into Massachusetts so far! I'm with you on road trips, though--anywhere! Great post.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Liz! I love when books inspire us to see a place, gather all the "feels" and see all the sights. You should plan a trip! I know a good tour guide. *wink*
DeleteI love Falmouth and Cape Cod. My husband's family had a house there for many years and hubby lived there for a while before we got married. Actually my newest book, True Dreams, takes place there, with a few scenes at The Knob, right in Falmouth, in Quisset Harbor. What a great location for your series! And I loved your series also!
ReplyDeleteWOW, Kari, that's so cool! It's a lovely area. Can't wait to read True Dreams and see it through your eyes! And, thank you for your kind words! ❤️
DeleteYour series sounds awesome! And now you've made me want to visit the Cape right now! I think I'll wait until spring, though😉
ReplyDeleteHahaha... Right?! But BURRR... Spring is perfect. Thanks for reading, Elsa! 🙂
DeleteIt's been many years since I visited the Cape, but your blog was a happy reminder. Great setting for a series.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kathleen! It's truly inspiring!
DeleteBeautiful house and love hearing when places are saved for their historic value. Yes, wish it was around the corner so I could visit.
ReplyDeleteWe so often hear about the other side...when an old estate succumbs to time, costs, and neglect and is replaced by a new housing development, etc. This one was lovingly saved and restored, and that's the real happy ending for me here!
DeleteI love travelling and discovering new places. Hubby and I hardly ever travelled because our jobs were so crazy--the medical field. He worked 24 hour shifts and I worked 12 hours. I think that's why we sold our house and took off in the fifth wheel. It was so worth seeing so many states. 39 to be exact. We had a blast!
ReplyDeleteLove the sounds of these books and can't wait to check them out!
A kindred spirit! Yay, Karen! You've racked up some serious miles and adventures - no doubt - when hitting the road with your "hubby." I bet some of those experiences end up in YOUR BOOKS, too. Thanks for reading. 🙂
DeleteBeautiful pictures! I so want to visit there with my husband. One day!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely do, Kara! There are SO MANY great places to stay and dine in the area! Plus, Falmouth is a launch point to Martha's Vineyard via ferry - which you can also visit from the comfort of your own home with book two in this series - Hellfire and Handbaskets! 😁 Win-win!
DeleteYour travel posts are like "armchair vacations." Loved this one. Keep doing these, Kathy. They're great.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joan! Great to hear you enjoy them! I have a list of travel destinations already planned for this year, and I'd LOVE to take our readers along! ❤️
DeleteI love old houses and your series sounds great! Thanks for posting.
