It's Autumn...why am I talking about winter and Holiday books??? by Peggy Jaeger

I know we're all sick of those Christmas in July Hallmark store sales, the way retailers start promoting their holiday sales and markdowns around Labor Day, and the general commercialization of what is supposed to be a religious celebratory time. Not to mention the Netflix, Hallmark Channel, and now Lifetime Channels all flooding the airwaves with Holiday themed movies from October 1 until New years Day.

I'm sick of all that, too.

But....

There's a reason writers of romance release Holiday Romance/Love stories before the holiday season begins: we want to get a leg up on the Holiday book buying/gift giving consumer market.

Makes sense, no? Hee hee

Plus, we're all really excited to share out stories with our readers.

So, with that in mind, let me introduce you to my Holiday RomCom release for this year, which drops in just 4 days: MISTLETOE, MOBSTERS, & MOZZARELLA.

I love big families, all the drama and comedy that comes with them, and the way each member fits a certain spot in the family food chain. I grew up an only child, but when my mother married my stepfather he brought along with him 4 brothers and a sister, all their spouses, and the plethora of children they'd each had. Even though most of them didn't like my mother and  I ( Don't ask. Long story) I was still an observant member of a loud and at times comedically volatile family that I've patterned my fictional San Valentinos after. Only, it's really a little too close to home to be called totally fictional.

In MMM, my heroine, Madonna "Donna" San Valentino, is the oldest and only daughter in a family of 6 kids. Her younger brothers are spoiled and selfish, and she wonders nightly how any of them managed to get girls to marry them. When Donna discovers the dead body of one of her employees in the family deli freezer, it sets off a series of events that have her connecting with her first love and wondering what's happened to all the dreams she had for her life.

Don't let the heavy content material scare you. This IS a romcom. You can't write the San Valentinos any other way but with laughter ringing through their lives.

Because I am so passionate and so in love with this family, I've got several promotions going on right now for the  10.14.2020 release of the book.

1. I’ve got a Goodreads Giveaway from now until 10.13.2020

2. I’m having a Facebook release day party with 15 of my favorite author/friends

3.Plus, I’ve got a GoddessFish blog/blitz tour currently going on.

Those are just some of the ways you can get a copy of the book, but let me offer you one more: I'll gift an autographed PRINT copy of the book ( US residents only due to exorbitant shipping costs! Sorry) to one luck winner who comments below and tells me their favorite HOLIDAY MOVIE. Mine is LOVE, ACTUALLY. Now you...

Be sure to join me at any of the above events. I love meeting new readers!!! Until then, you can follow me here:  Peggy Jaeger
Until next time ~ Peg

Falling into Romance? by Hannah Rowan #RomanceGems

The leaves are turning brilliant colors of orange and yellow, the air is crisp, and there’s frost on car windows in the mornings.  Mums decorate gardens and pumpkins proliferate everywhere. Pumpkin flavor is all the rage, though honestly the thought of pumpkin ice cream or pumpkin-flavored coffee strikes me as rather gross. Spooky decorations abound.

Fall is the time of year when I have clothes strewn all over the house while I’m in the process of washing and storing all my summer clothes, digging out the sweaters, and trying to decide how to dress in the changing weather.

Fall once had its good points. As a child I’d be excited about the start of school. (Yes, I was that kind of kid!) I enjoyed raking leaves into a big pile and setting it on fire, which was legal at the time. And of course there was Halloween when I trudged from door to door filling my pillowcase with yummy treats.

But now…fall means it’s about to get cold!  It means I have to set aside my sandals and squeeze my feet into confining shoes. It means no more Jersey tomatoes or sweet corn from the farm stand.

For me, fall is redeemed by one thing—my wedding anniversary starts off the season. It’s become our tradition to take some sort of special trip in honor of the occasion, and I do love to travel. As the years go on our celebrations have evolved from something along the lines of an overnight trip to the Poconos complete with the heart-shaped whirlpool tub to a week in Europe.

Under normal circumstances this year, our 45th, would have involved some sort of extra special destination.

What we ended up with was two nights in upstate New York in a resort called Mohonk Mountain House, which honors the spooky part of fall by resembling a haunted Stephen King-like castle. With some trepidation, we ate our meals inside a public place for the first time in over six months.

I swam in the indoor pool and he worked out in the gym, the only guests using them. What a treat after missing my daily swim all these months!

And we walked and walked. Up very high hills where we could look out over the landscape and gaze at the colorful leaves. Through gardens and greenhouses festooned with pumpkins of all sizes. We were lucky to have sunshine and fairly warm weather.

So if my fellow Gems are celebrating Fall into Romance this month, I suppose you could say I qualify, and maybe fall isn’t so bad after all.

Falling in Love – It takes two by Jan Scarbrough

I’ve learned one thing about romantic love in all my years. It takes two people. Those two people must want to make it work. During my first year of college, I asked my mother how you know if a man was the right one to marry. I remember clearly, she said “you never know.”

So, falling in love is always a risk. We romance authors write plenty of stories about heroes and heroines hurt by love. We also strive to make our endings “happily-ever-after.” No such thing in real life, but sometimes we come close to it.

When I opened the door to a blind date after four years single and no dates, I had no clue that five years later, I’d marry the guy and twenty years after that, we’d still be together. Our first conversation around dinner was about his two nearly grown children and mine. Our kids were the same age. Then we talked computers. I was a technical writer and he was a computer programmer. We had something in common.

What do you remember talking about to your significant other when you first met?

In my Ghost Mountain Ranch series, the first FREE book is called Hank. It was originally published as a Christmas novella for the Montana McKennas series written with Maddie James. I had always intended to take Hank away from the McKenna Ranch to work at one across the mountain. The ending of Hank’s story in the book that bears his name is anything but happily after. He had to wait until the next book Darby to get his romantic happy ending. Here’s an excerpt.

***

Darby drew a breath before speaking. “What did you say to me that night at the hospital?” She paused. “You know, when I left.”

Hank ran a hand through his thick head of hair and swallowed hard as if he suddenly grew nervous. “I don’t know what you mean.”

Grinning, Darby shook her head. “You know very well what you said, but it was so faint, I was afraid I’d heard you wrong.”

He offered a bemused smile. “Oh.”

Was he sweating? He’d never said he loved her. She’d just gone on the assumption years ago. But as the saying went, assuming something was never wise.

“I think you said the L word,” she teased.

He blushed, turning as red as his red flannel shirt.

“If you meant it, you need to convince me. It’s time to cowboy up, buster.”

Hank’s jaw clinched. He hesitated a moment, then placed his hands on the desktop and pushed to his feet. There was a new determination in his eyes.

“Darby York, you know damn well I love you.”

She tucked her chin, playing coy. “I do?”

He came around the desk and pulled her into his arms, holding her in a great big grizzly bear hug. They stood that way, drawing warmth from each other, feeling each other’s heartbeat, until Darby slipped her arms around his neck.

“I always thought you knew,” Hank whispered, “but I could never say it.”

“I did know, but it’s always nice to hear it said.”

“Biggest mistake I ever made. Not telling you.”

Darby drew back a little to gaze into his eyes. “My biggest mistake was running from the ranch and you.”

“No,” he said firmly. “There are reasons for things. You’ve had a good life. You’ve got your two kids.”

Yes, she had her kids, and she’d had a wonderful life. But her life wasn’t over. A new chapter was just beginning.

“What if I stayed at the ranch, too,” she ventured. “But I won’t stay unless you agree to marry me.”

His mouth dropped open.

“Because I love you, too, Hank Slade.”

Then she stood on tiptoe and kissed his lips so completely that the past was forgotten. Only the present mattered. They would make a new future together.

Ah ... Fall ... and My Favorite Holiday by Nancy Fraser

You’d think someone who lives in a short-summer location such as Atlantic Canada wouldn’t be all that eager for the arrival of fall ... and I’m not. I don’t do pumpkin spice anything (other than pie), and I don’t care for traipsing through the fallen leaves (or raking them).

What I am excited about is the onset of the holiday season. From the first day of fall on, we have an abundance of things to celebrate!  Here in Canada, we celebrate Thanksgiving on October 12th. I’ll be baking sweet potato pies for ten and enjoying my turkey with almost all the trimmings!

Close on Canadian Thanksgiving’s heels is another holiday and my personal favorite: Halloween!

I spent over twenty years working in healthcare, most of them at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, where we were encouraged to dress for the holiday. Believe me, I took that encouragement to heart on a number of occasions.

However, my love for Halloween goes much farther back than my job at the hospital. I’m a child of the 50s and 60s, so my childhood experiences with Halloween were far different than those of my grandchildren. Back then, it wasn’t unusual to trek for miles for pillowcases full of candy. Nobody worried about tainted treats. We tricked or treated in stores, restaurants, and even in bars. We ran gleefully through the streets from the first streetlight until we could barely see our hands in front of our faces. It was the one time our parents looked the other way about curfew and more than one classmate missed school the next day due to a tummy ache. It was ... magical.

I used those childhood memories a few years back when I wrote a vintage novella titled, Bewitched. And, while there were no actual witches or paranormal elements in the story, it did have a wonderfully nostalgic feel about it.

Chicago, Fall 1964

Allison Stiles is the epitome of responsibility. Guardian to her two rambunctious younger brothers, she also runs a home daycare. While she doesn't have time for a vacation, she really needs a diversion.

Enter Eric Thomas, her new neighbor. Tall, dark and handsome and just what she needs to get her mind off her responsibilities, even if only for a short time.

Moving into the house he inherited from his uncle was not part of Eric Thomas' plan. Yet, starting a new business ties up a good portion of his capital, so he forgoes the fancy downtown apartment for the quaint Rogers Park neighborhood.

Now if he could just get his mind off his sexy neighbor and back on the business at hand.

Given my love for Halloween, it’s only fitting that I make a second attempt at something geared to the season. This time there are paranormal elements—including a very vengeful spirit. Today is release day for The Secrets of Gable House. Yes ... it’s another “Book Birthday”!

Noah Miller is shocked to learn that an unknown great uncle has named him heir to the family fortune, including the residence known as Gable House. Built by Noah’s fifth-back grandfather, the house is ripe with family secrets and unusual occurrences.

Maggie Shephard has spent the past ten years researching the history of Willow-By-The-Sea, including that of her own ancestors. Considered an authority on New England history, she’s often sought out as a consultant. When Noah Miller asks for her help in acquainting him with both the house and his ancestors, she jumps at the chance to share her knowledge with the handsome architect.

Noah and Maggie have an immediate attraction to one another, made even more so by the time they spend together researching the Gable family history. The fact that each Gable male died an untimely and gruesome death, leads Noah and Maggie on a quest for the truth in hopes of setting a murderous spirit free.

And, of course, there’s a trailer!

And a JigSaw Puzzle of my cover!

I would be remiss if I didn’t give a special SHOUT OUT to fellow Romance Gem, Kathryn Hills, whose ghost-hunting experience helped add a special something to my story. Writing The Secrets of Gable House was almost as much fun as trick-or-treating. Almost, but not quite.

Until next month please stay safe, stay healthy, stay happy and well read.

Surprises for Today by @JoanReeves #RomanceGems

Good morning! I arrived home yesterday, completely exhausted from a week of taking care of an adorable but rambunctious doggie.

Since I've had my "I want a dog" fix satisfied for a while, I'm on to things I love and things I hate.

First, Things I Hate List

This list is topped by moving. Yuck. Is there anything more exhausting than moving? If there is, I don't know what it is.

We thought we'd be in this house forever, but now I find a 2-story just doesn't work with my increasing vision problems.

My office is a huge clutter cave so I'm starting there. I managed to fill 4 boxes with books without weeping. I'll take them to Half Price Books in the morning so they can find new homes.

I'm keeping some old, yellowed paperbacks from the golden age of romance—the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Darling Hubby just rolls his eyes when I tell him I have to keep them. Some are the first books of friends, some are the books that inspired me to write.

Things I Love List

I'll limit this list to 2 things germane to this post. First is shopping for a new house. Even though it's exhausting, it's still fun—visualizing how I would decorate a new house—a 1-story. It'll take some time because a 1-story in the size we want is hard to find. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

The second thing on today's list is promoting other authors like Connie Vines who is the October Author Spotlight. Connie hangs her hat in sunny southern California.

Drop by the Author Spotlight page and read all about Connie and her books.

Perfect for Halloween is her book, Here Today, Zombie Tomorrow, a Buffy-type romance for Halloween.

October is Fall into Romance

Our October promotion and blog theme, I guess you could say, is Fall into Romance, a celebration of autumn and romance novels for readers and writers. Does it seem odd to you that there aren't more autumn-settings in romance novels?

In my own booklist, I have one book that ends on a crisp autumn day, Romeo and Judy Anne, but no book that begins in autumn.

I was thinking about this a couple of months ago when I was plotting my most recent release, The Key To Kristina. I deliberately set it with the opening scene at the end of September.

The latest review of this mystery-romance said: "Brilliant!!Fantastic book. Very hard to put down."

Reviews like that thrill me. *g* The price on this book has been raised to $3.99. I don't know when Amazon will make that effective so you may be able to get it for 99¢ today. There are a few ads that will appear for it so it will drop to 99¢ on those days.

Sign up for my newsletter and you'll be the first to know when any of my books are on sale for 99¢.

Fall Recipes by Karen Whiddon

Autumn comes late to Texas.  But it does arrive, while summer has to be dragged away kicking and screaming.  Cooler mornings, less-stifling nights, and the breeze feels more like relief than the hot breath of hell.  (Not kidding!) I can write sitting outside again (if the dang pollen would abate.)  We don't have a lot of fall foliage like up north, but I have a beautiful maple tree in my front yard that always turns pretty colors.

Football, my favorite professional sport to watch, returns.  Dinner is less grilling and more slow cooker meals.  I can't wait to make chili again!  I have my own bunch of favorite fall meals to cook.  Soups and casseroles mostly.   And breads and cakes and things I shouldn't be eating but will, even if it's just a small bite.

What are some of your favorite fall recipes?  I'd love to get some new ones, so if you have time, please tell me in the comments below.

Dogs Are The Best People @JoanReeves #RomanceGems

Normally, my first of the month post points out the updates on the blog, but I've spent this past week babysitting my daughter's dog while she and her hubby take a vacation.

My notes about the blog are home so I'll take another blog date to brief you on the changes, including the Author Spotlight for October.

I say I'm babysitting rather than dog sitting because Freddie is  more like a child than a dog.

He had his first birthday last week added a new kerchief to his wardrobe of kerchiefs, courtesy of his visits to the vet.

When Darling Daughter puts a kerchief on him, he immediately poses on his own without anyone saying, "Be still, Freddie."

He's a natural and seemingly loves to have his picture taken. When he goes for a walk, he collects compliments. Daughter is frequently asked what kind of dog he is.

The answer to that is a Golden Doodle, meaning half golden retriever and half poodle. When someone says, "What a beautiful dog," Freddie prances with his feathery tale waving back and forth as if he understands what was said.

Freddie is on the cover of April Fool Proposition, one of my short stories. (I'll be publishing it and four others starting next week.) That picture of him was taken when he was about 6 months old, and it was perfect for my story of a lost puppy.

He's also under contract by 2 instagram accounts to be a spokes-dog.

Love Dogs?

I do. Our lifestyle doesn't allow for adopting a companion at this time, and I miss having a dog. Between Freddie and writing dogs in my books, my need for doggie-gratification is filled.

Favorite Dog Quotes

As a dog lover—no offense to cats and cat lovers—I want to share some of favorite dog quotes.

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went. —Will Rogers

I've seen a look in dogs' eyes, a quickly vanishing look of amazed contempt, and I am convinced that basically dogs think humans are nuts. —John Steinbeck

Anybody who doesn't know what soap tastes like never washed a dog. —Franklin P. Jones

The average dog is a nicer person than the average person. —Andy Rooney

A dog teaches a boy fidelity, perseverance, and to turn around three times before lying down. —Robert Benchley

If I have any beliefs about immortality, it is that certain dogs I have known will go to heaven, and very, very few persons. —James Thurber

Ever consider what our dogs must think of us? I mean, here we come back from a grocery store with the most amazing haul—chicken, pork, half a cow. They must think we're the greatest hunters on earth! —Anne Tyler

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea. —Robert A. Heinlein

“Nothing in the world is friendlier than a wet dog.” —Anonymous (Freddie loves rain and playing in the mud, but he doesn't like the bath that follows.)

If you pick up a starving dog and make him prosperous, he will not bite you; that is the principal difference between a dog and a man. —Mark Twain

You can say any foolish thing to a dog, and the dog will give you a look that says, "Wow, you're right! I never would've thought of that!' —Dave Barry

Handle every stressful situation like a dog. If you can’t eat or play with it, just pee on it and walk away. —Anonymous

Dogs are better than human beings because they know but do not tell. —Emily Dickinson

If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then give him only two of them. —Phil Pastoret

Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen. — Orhan Pamuk

My favorite dog character I've written in a book is Tiger, a golden retriever, in Second Chance Bride. He's an essential part of that story.

In real life, Tiger was Freddie's predecessor, who was loved just as much during his life. He's chasing sticks and toys in that big dog park in heaven now.

He was the only man she wanted—and the one man she could never have.

She gave up everything and reinvented herself as wealthy, successful Constance Quinn, a woman who carefully guards her emotions. Yet, she longs for all that she's denied herself. The only problem is there's no room for love or even for relationships in her rigidly controlled existence until she decides to find the part of herself that was lost in her transformation.

When she meets Alex Martinez, something hot and urgent passes between them. Their attraction is mutual. Their desire is palpable.

Although Constance cannot resist him, she realizes she's playing with fire and avoids him, but Alex won't be kept at arm's length.

As their desire grows, so does her fear that Alex might discover the secret she is desperate to keep from him.

Bookzilla, TOP 500 REVIEWER, 5.0 out of 5 stars

Easy to follow stand-alone. No editing errors, graphic violence or drag-you-down drama.

Enjoyable HEA romance. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.

“Ah, you know what Graciella says about coincidence. It’s God’s way of remaining anonymous.”

'He told me young dogs would always be adopted but that this old dog would never find someone to love him if we didn’t take him. I told him that the dog wouldn’t have many years or maybe not even months of life left. He said that was an even better reason to adopt him so he’d know love before he died.”

I look forward to other works by this author.

To Conclude

Here's some advice for all of the mudslinging politicians. "If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog." —President Harry S. Truman

Last Chance Beach: Summer's End is here for only a few more weeks. The box set is still only 99¢ and is available on Amazon.
