Next, I'm headed back to the beach with SAND, SALT, AND SPIRITS - A LAST CHANCE BEACH ROMANCE - Releasing November 2, 2021

Can a weekend visit to Last Chance Beach undo decades of brokenhearted memories? Conjuring up some island magic might just be the trick. Or treat!

Kyle Worthington hasn’t returned to Last Chance Beach in years. He’s worked hard to prove himself to his overbearing father and the rest of the world. Now it’s October, and the vacation island paradise is celebrating the season with an island-wide Fall Festival. Family obligation demands he participate. Everyone will be there, including the ghost that haunts his grandparents’ B&B.

The running joke that Kyle never sticks with anything—not a career or a woman—will continue to plague him. Unless he brings a knockout of a date to the weekend-long event. Cassandra Corwin fits the bill perfectly. Kyle’s had his eye on his brilliant, beautiful coworker since day one. But Cassie is an enigma, a loner. There’s no room in her life for anyone except Odin, her goofball of a Great Dane.

Will this woman of mystery agree to Kyle’s scheme to impress his family? Can two near strangers from opposite worlds survive family gatherings and back-to-back Halloween events while pretending to be a couple? Kyle’s father seems hell-bent on derailing everything before they even shout “Boo!”

Or will the island’s magic prove too powerful for them to resist?

Falling into Fall Down South!

By:  Marcia King-Gamble

www.lovemarcia.com

Most people  think there's only one  season down south,  Summer! Summer! and more Summer! But that's so not true.

We have a wet season, dry season, and eternal summer. All three tend to go on forever. But if  you live here long enough, you realize that the seasons may be defined by what the locals wear.

Right now, it's mid-October, considered almost the dry season, but reality says differently. It's been pouring nonstop  for days, and it is still hot! hot! hot! My air conditioning is on full blast, and because of the heat factor (high eighties), I am still wearing shorts (a no-no for locals after September). For you folk up north, think of it in the same manner as wearing white after labor day.

Let me tell you a secret. As the cooler, drier season approaches, we can usually spot tourists because they are the only ones in shorts.   The same goes for picking out tourists/snowbirds  in  nice restaurants and bars. Rarely will you see a local out in shorts at night, unless they are heading for a Tiki bar, and even then. Enough said. Google snowbird.

The holidays, though, are an entirely different matter. Down south,  we use any excuse to get in the mood and  party. I have seen more snowmen on lawns in a place that  never snows,  than  I have ever seen up north. Yes, we like snow and cold weather from a distance, and in December we've even brought snow making machines in so  young kids can play.

When October comes around, we 're thinking holidays. The pinks, reds and teals get exchanged for  oranges, yellows and browns. The lemons, pineapples and sunflowers are put away,( I still rock em until I can't find em),  Then again, I dance to a different beat, and always have. I am a sucker for the holidays and my cluttered garage is testimony to that.

Come any change of season, the frustrated decorator in me emerges. The key is to bargain shop for those decorations.  If they don't work, toss them out. Here's what I did with my table, and it's super easy to do. Use wine glasses if you don't have candle holders. These are easily picked up at stores like Marshalls, or Old Time Pottery. Fill the bowl up with leaves or fake veggies bought at the Dollar Store. The other option is turning over the candle holders, keeping the fruit, potpourri  or whatever you've  added in the bowls. The flat parts, or feet now become your candle holders. Add candles or tea lights and you are rockin' n rollin'.

Your table can adjust to the seasons by simply changing what you've placed in the bowls. You can circle the base with festive  wreaths, or have Mardi Gras beads hang from those bowls.  Here's  what I did for Easter and Christmas.

Now I have Halloween on the brain, and I'm thinking about what I'll be wearing to the party. Virtual this year, of course.  I am a fan of  the homemade costume.  Check your closets, add a couple of accessories from Walmart or the Dollar Store, and you are set. This is my Alice White Rabbit costume, consisting of one white jumpsuit, and a Dollar Store boa and bunny ears.

And since we're talking about partying, don't miss the Last Call for Last Chance Beach: Summer's End. You can still pick up these short  stories at the bargain price of 99 cents until October 31st.

Have a Happy Halloween one and all!

You've Been Booed! by Kathryn Hills #RomanceGems

Ahh, autumn. It’s my favorite season. I love the warm days and cold nights. Sweaters, pumpkins, scary fun. Plus, living in northern New England, Mother Nature is all about showing off her vibrant fall colors here. But what would life at Camp Hills be without some humor? Sit back and let me tell you a story.

It was a dark and stormy night. Kidding. I just love it when a story starts like that. It all began when Darling Daughter was a tween...

For as long as I can remember—and certainly for her entire quarter of a century life—we’ve celebrated Halloween. In a BIG way! Hayrides to pumpkin patches where you pick your own. Trips to Salem and theme parks with haunted events. Parties, decorations, festive foods, you name it. Don’t even get me started on the shows and movies we watch every October. So, when a neighbor introduced us to “Booing”, we wholeheartedly embraced the fun experience as a family.

Are you familiar with Booing? For those who aren’t, it’s when you assemble a bunch of fun Halloween-themed treats (candy and trinkets) and deliver them to an unsuspecting neighbor. I say “unsuspecting”, because you pull a “ding-dong-dash” maneuver. Ring the doorbell, leave the goodies, and dash away before you’re seen. Your “Boo” is a surprise for the occupants of the house, an anonymous gift of Halloween cheer, typically for the children. (Although, I have heard of adults partaking, delivering alcoholic beverages along with chocolate. Totally onboard with this idea if anyone wants to play!)

Once you’ve been “Booed”, you place a sign on your door so participating neighbors will know to skip your house and go to someone new. Then you Boo two other households, and the fun grows.

Charming, you might think, and it is! Super-fun, too, since you get to shop for someone else with the sole intention of delighting them. Plus, you get to speculate who Booed you.

So…where did we go astray? Because you KNOW we did. Darling Daughter, being the sweetheart that she is, didn’t just want to leave treats for her close friends. She knew there were two kids, living only part time in our neighborhood because their parents were divorced. No one really knew them; they came and went so often. “Why not Boo them?” she asked. “Make them feel welcome.” I was a proud mama when she shared her idea.

It was a real crock-pot bubbling, wood stove crackling, frosty fall evening when Mr. H volunteered to help our girl with the ding-dong-dash part of the plan. They bundled up, took the gifts and the corresponding “You’ve been Booed!” printed message that explains it all, grabbed a couple of flashlights, and headed out into the spooky darkness.

Time went by as I prepared our supper and fed the dogs. I glanced at the clock several times, wondering why they were gone so long. Just ring the bell and run. It’s easy. Half an hour later, they finally came home, laughing so hard they were crying. Apparently, the neighbor Darling Daughter decided to Boo was home alone with his wife. No kids that night. When the doorbell rang and no one was there, the dad whipped on all the spotlights, thinking he’d been pranked. My two hid behind the neighbor’s car, trying not to be discovered. The man inside began yelling, “It’s a package. What the hell? It’s a God damned package. Who did this?”

“I don’t know,” the wife said, obviously concerned. According to my two hooligans.

What's the moral of this story? I suppose it’s…sometimes you have to be a little bit naughty to be nice. Santa definitely will understand.

And the neighbors who initially Booed us? The dad in that family eventually admitted he took out our fence when he tried to dash away in the dark. Ouch! We were wondering how that happened. We live in a fun place. What else can I say? 😊

If you’d like to Boo your neighbors, family members, or friends this Halloween season, head to Pinterest for some great ideas and free printable signs for the gift bag message and for your front door. Just don’t mention me, okay? We Hills are notorious troublemakers. *wink*

If you enjoyed this story and would like to learn more about my books, know that Halloween is exciting for my characters as well. Whether they're attending a costume ball in the past—as in the late Victorian era—or they're on the streets of Boston in modern times, thrills and chills are just the beginning.  Until next time, thanks for reading. Stay safe and go spread some magic!

Where Did the Month Go??? by Nancy Fraser

October has flown by faster than any month this year. Tomorrow the goblins will come out, the ghosts will haunt us and, more than likely, someone will try ... I repeat ... TRY to steal my broom!

Beware ... I don't need it to put a spell on you.

My October was filled with hard work and fun and a combination of both. I spent the first week and half prepping for the Fall in Love with New England Reader/Author Conference in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Beginning in early September (maybe even in mid-August), I began my promo activities. I put book labels on packets of gum for the conference tote bags, assembled 100 book-related charms for those who were collecting them for our annual charm bracelet giveaway, added tassles and charms to 150 bookmarks, and assembled two gift baskets. Oh, and fifty candy bags for the readers who went from room to room trick or treating!

It was a lot of work, but well worth it for the chance to meet so many wonderful readers and new-to-me authors. Not to mention the very successful booksigning that was held on Saturday.

However, what made the conference even more special were the seven other Romance Gems in attendance. Even though I already knew a few of them, it was great to meet the rest.

Peggy Jaeger, Nora LeDuc, Elsa Kurt, Satin Russell, Kari Lemor, Lucinda Race, Me, Kathryn Hills

Two youngest grandchildren
Now, as we reach the last two days of the month, we have trick-or-treaters to look forward to and costume parties to attend.
Middle Granddaughter-Makeup Queen

Don't begrudge an older teen some candy (it's better than them attending a questionable party). Or, a child without a costume (maybe they can't afford it). AND, please remember to drive safely if you're out and about on Thursday night.

Personally, I'm looking forward to my grandchildren and their myriad of costumes. They never cease to amaze me with their creativity. The two oldest don't go out any more, but the other three will be ringing bells and collecting as much candy as their bags will hold.

Just because we've reached the end of the month doesn't mean we're out of giveaways. I'm in the mood to share, so I'll gladly give away a signed copy of my contemporary/secret baby book, Home is Where the Hunk is, to one lucky commentor who shares their favorite Halloween memory with the group. (Note: U.S. and Canada only for signed copy. Others will receive a digital copy.)

Don't forget to include your email address (written out, eg., romwriter96 at gmail dot com).

Scare me - I LOVE IT!! by Peggy Jaeger

There are really only two things I love about Halloween: the candy and the scary movies.
The candy doesn't need an explanation, I mean, come on: Candy corn, Peppermint Patties?
Paleeze!

The fact that I like scary movies – and the scarier the better - is one of the top 10 things you need to know about me that I have listed on my blog bio. And when I say scary, I’m not talking about all the blood and gore crap and the torture porn that passes as scary these days. Movies like Saw, versions 1-10,000,000 and the Texas Chain Saw massacre franchise. Those movies are meant to shock you, not really scare you.

When I say scary I mean those movies that make you drop down into your seat at the movie theater, pull your legs up to your chest, make you heart pound, your ears ring, and make you cover your eyes with fingers you can peek through because you just know something’s gonna happen. You know it; you feel it; you sense it. Your adrenaline goes haywire; your hormones kick in with either a flight or fight or paralyze reaction; a scream gets lodged in the back of your throat, or alternately, pierces the air around you like an air raid warning. Your lips tingle, your toes wiggle and you can’t keep still in your seat.

I love those reactions!!

When I was a kid and my parents worked late into the evening, I was usually alone in our apartment. Back then there was a station on regular TV ( no cable back then, kids!) called CREATURE FEATURES that played nightly. I watched that damn channel every single night, alone in our apartment, a blanket pulled up over me and every single light in the house on full blast. My mother could never understand why our electric bills were so high.

My scary movie watching wasn’t only relegated to old black and white movies of the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s though, with Boris Karloff, Bela Lugosi, and Lon Chaney. Every weekend I took my meager allowance money and went to the actual movies, which cost $0.75 for a Saturday matinee.  Lord, I loved those days and those movies. Nothing really compares nowadays for plot, star power, or scare factor for me.

Some of my favorite scary movies of all time, the ones I can watch over and over again and really enjoy, run the gamut from sublimely scary to ridiculously uproarious.

In the scary scary group, I’ve got:

Halloween (the first one only. The rest were just dumb)

The Exorcist (I went to church every day for two months after seeing this the first time! – I was 11)
Scream (One of the best beginnings of any scary movie out there! The rest of the franchise wasn't scary.)

In the fun and funny group, I’ve got:

Practical Magic ( love Sandra Bullock!)
Young Frankenstein (I-gor not ee-gor)
Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein ( I went my pants every single time when Costello tries to tell Abbot about Dracula!)
It’s the great pumpkin Charlie Brown ( Because it’s Charlie Brown)
Hocus Pocus ( Bette Midler is a superstar and Kathy Najimi flying on a Hoover is side splitting).

So, want to be my BFF? Go to a scary movie with me and watch the whole thing. Heehee

Mercury Goes Retrograde: The Return of an Old Flame or Truth Bombs? by Connie Vines

From October 31 to November 20, messenger planet Mercury will be traveling retrograde through Scorpio. Trick or treat? The cosmic trickster will certain have some surprises up his sleeve. The truth inevitably comes boiling to the surface during this phase, as mysteries reveal and skeletons tumble out of the closets.

Brace yourself for breakdowns: Communication planet Mercury turns retrograde in Scorpio from October 31 to November 20, 2019. Truth bombs, travel snags and technology hiccups are on the horizon

In her book, Retrograde Planets: Traversing the Inner Landscape, Erin Sullivan (1992) states that, retrogression is the period of time during which a planet in our solar system appears to be moving backwards as we see it against the fixed backdrop of the stars.

This means Mercury retrograde is an optical illusion.

Perhaps, an optical illusion, but it certainly manifests in my reality. Especially if your birth sign is either Gemini or Virgo.  Both of these Sun Signs are ruled by Mercury. I can vouch for the ‘Oh, no!” factor.  I’ve already had a head-start on the Halloween event.

This is because Mercury retrograde also has what’s called a “shadow period” (which we explain in this post), so you may feel the “retroshade” a couple of weeks before and after the official Mercury retrograde dates. Great, right?

It's the little things in life. . .people yelling at me (why? Who knows); people following me around telling me their troubles and insisting I help them (do I look like a construction contractor to you?).  A final edit of three chapters went blip on the computer screen and disappeared (I’m the woman who backs up on c: drive, a storage drive, and saves to a thumb drive).  A student (accidentally) smacked me on left shin with his skateboard (inside the office).  Every pot of coffee I’ve made this week has resulted in coffee grounds in the carafe (I’m banned from appliance until further notice).

I know, none of these events have been life-threatening, nor have they been part of my usual daily routine, either.

I’m searching for spiders under everything.  I’m covered with mosquito welts. My normally organized purse, has become a worm-hole where important documents go missing, my tethered car keys attach my fingertips, Starbucks gets my coffee order wrong (completely, scary wrong) well, you get the idea…I’ve developed Retrograde Paranoia.

What can you do to lessen the effect?  How do you prepare for this signal-jamming cycle?

Mental Mercury also rules the transfer of information, and it’s wise to password-protect all sensitive data and back it up to the cloud. Since Mercury retrograde can disrupt technology, take special precautions with your digital data. Back up all your important files and photos to the cloud. Mercury rules contracts, so think before you ink any deals. Either wrap up important negotiations before the cycle starts, or wait to sign documents until after Mercury goes direct.

Pro tip: To play it extra safe during Mercury’s backspin, keep beverages far away from your computer; this is the time when you could knock over a cup of coffee onto your keyboard or laptop. These are mistakes that can be avoided with a little extra caution until Mercury stations direct.

Mercury Retrograde Survival Guide

Press Re-wind

Try not to start anything new. Focus on activities that start with the prefix “re-,” which means to go back. Review all your contracts before you sign. Renew your commitments, rather than making new ones. Prepare to repeat yourself often. Reunite with old friends. Redecorate a room. Rekindle a romance.

That last one should be taken with caution. Mercury retrograde CAN bring back an old flame, but often it’s for the purpose of closure, not necessarily because this is the “one that got away.” Don’t be surprised if you get a Facebook friend request from someone you dated ages ago or a forgotten childhood friend. We’ve bumped into long-lost friends (and loves) on the street during Mercury retrograde. Strange times!

Mercury retrograde do’s and try-not-to do’s.

Do…
1. Review all contracts and legal documents before signing.
2. Pause and breathe before speaking. (Repeat yourself if necessary!)
3. Read all emails and documents before you send.
4. Insure/track important mail and packages (Mercury rules the postal system).
5. Get your vehicles (or bikes) tuned up, pack an emergency roadside kit.
6. Leave early for any travel and appointments, since Mercury Rx can delay flights.
7. Renew your commitments instead of making new ones.
8. Focus on the prefix re-, which means to go backward (renew, review, revamp, redecorate, et al.)
9. Plan reunions with old friends & loved ones (but prepare for possible mishaps!)
10. Expect to hear from/run into people from your past at the weirdest moments.
11. Get sentimental. Reconnect with your roots, walk down memory lane.
12. Practice forgiveness. Finish processing what’s unresolved so you can let it go.
13. Confirm all dates, plans, meetings, appointments.
14. Think of the retrograde as a quarterly review period, a chance to pause and finish what you’ve started.
15. Back up your digital data (photos, contact lists, files) before the retrograde or ASAP if it’s started.

Try not to…
1. Buy new vehicles, electronic equipment, or gadgets (unless they come with a good return/repair policy).
2. Sign contracts without a thorough review (delay until Mercury turns direct if you can).
3. Fly off the handle or jump to conclusions if someone misunderstands you.
4. Run into the arms/bed of an ex without careful screening (Mercury reunions aren’t always meant to last).
5. Put anything sketchy into an email or text (you could hit “Reply All” or send to the wrong person!).
7. Leave late for flights or appointments.
8. Start anything new on top before finishing what’s ahead on the to-do list.
9. Lead people on, give mixed messages or believe everything you hear (actions speak louder than words).

The silver-lining
Mercury retrograde is a great opportunity to handle unfinished business. Most of us start a million things that we don’t complete, never realizing how much psychic clutter this creates. The retrograde is like a quarterly review. It’s a chance to tie up those loose ends and create a clear vision for the future.

Take advantage of it, and you’ll emerge fresh and ready when Mercury goes direct. As the cliché goes, what you resist persists. So, the more you can embrace chaos or a lack of control (and isn’t control an illusion, anyhow?), the better you’ll survive this cycle!

(FYI to fellow Geminis: it's Ouchie Time for us.)

My Give-a-way is a copy of "Lynx" Rodeo Romance, Book 1.

I will draw a winner's name at 11:00 PM,
Good Luck!
