The Bloom of Love @LucindaRace #Romancegems

I’ve been mulling over this month’s blog post since the moment our theme was announced. Tree, shrubs and flowers are in bloom around my home and so are my allergies. We have been dealing in our own ways, with the world around us – but the one constant in all our lives is love.

Starting from when we’re born our lives are filled with love from our family. We continue to discover the wonder of it again and again. With the first blush of romantic love we have a sense that we can conquer the world. The rush of emotion you feel when you meet your partner, the instant bond when you hold your child in your arms and that moment your fur-baby lavishes you with affection. In those first heady moments we know in our hearts there isn’t an obstacle to large we can’t overcome.

Love gives us strength to face whatever lays ahead of us. We draw strength from it. I am a romantic at heart on all levels. Love gives me strength. I have faith I will never run out of love, it is like the magic well, the more I give the more I have to give. Love is a like my favorite rose, ever blooming in my heart. My hope for you is to take stock and discover that romance and love are in full bloom all around you.

On May 7,  I released my 11th book, The Matchmaker and The Marine. Here is the opening scene.

Melinda flipped her planner shut after drawing a heart next to the two names on the page on the notepaper. Another success. The strains of the “Wedding March” played by a string quartet filled the small flower-filled chapel. Guests rose from their seats to watch the petite bride glide down the aisle toward her handsome groom. Across the aisle in a pew, a tall, well-built man with blonde hair cropped military style and molten brown eyes locked on hers. He gave Melinda a half nod before his gaze followed the bride.

The pastor’s deep voice filled the room as he asked everyone to take their seats. He then turned to the couple to perform the ceremony.  After the newly married couple kissed, Melinda followed other guests in the receiving line to the bride and groom.

She beamed. “Stacey and Will, it was a beautiful ceremony.” Stacey was radiant. Will’s arm was curled around his new wife, holding her close to his side. “Melinda, this day wouldn’t have been possible without you.” Stacey lovingly gazed at Will. “Thank you for introducing us.”

Melinda kissed her cheek. “It was my pleasure.” Will lifted Stacey’s hand to his lips, grazing her ring finger. “I will tell all my single friends if they’re looking for love to give you a call.” His eyes twinkled. “You certainly have a knack for matchmaking.”

“You two made my job easy.” She looked over her shoulder. “You have more guests to greet, but I’ll see you during the reception.”

She strolled down the brick walkway to her car, content to see the love between Stacey and Will. Just as it was meant to be. After making the short drive to the country club, Melinda parked in the crowded lot.

As she crossed the parking area to the reception hall she daydreamed of how nice it would be to take off her pumps and walk barefoot. She reached for the brass knob on the carved wood door. Before she could turn the knob, it burst open. She took a step back. Her heel caught a crack in the stone step. She began to fall backward when strong hands caught her and held on tight.

A deep voice next to her ear said, “It’s okay, I’ve got you.” Melinda looked up into warm brown eyes. It was the man from the chapel.

“Um, thank you.” She smoothed her hand over her simple navy-blue dress and then pushed a curl behind her ear. “I’m not sure what happened.”

“It looks like your heel got caught.” She gave him a small smile. “It’s a good thing you were there to catch me.”

With a slight stiff bow, he said, “Adam Bell, at your service, ma’am.”

Thanksgiving is More than a Harvest Festival! by Connie Vines #RomanceGems

thanks·giv·ing
/ˌTHaNGksˈɡiviNG/

noun
1. the expression of gratitude, especially to God."he offered prayers in thanksgiving for his safe arrival"

2.    (in North America) an annual national holiday marked by religious observances and a traditional meal including turkey. The holiday commemorates a harvest festival celebrated by the Pilgrims in 1621, and is held in the US on the fourth Thursday in November. A similar holiday is held in Canada, usually on the second Monday in October.

What does this season represent to you?

I am blessed with a loving family, extended family, and friends.  My immediate family is able to gather-together and celebrate holidays in each other’s homes and places of worship.

I’d like to add a 21st century spin on ‘gratitude’ for my Romance Gems Blog post this November.

What is this author thankful for in 2019?  Here are 30 of my favorite things:

1. Dishwashers.

2. The Hallmark Channel holiday specials.

3. Your parents—because no matter how old you are, they can still solve any problem
.
4. Fireplaces.

5. The local farmer’s market.

6. The time you get to spend re-reading your favorite books, even if you mask it as “bedtime stories.”

7. Roasted pumpkin seeds, pumpkin pie, and all of the fall flavors (Yes, even in SoCal, we have fall).

8. Sunday afternoons with coffee and a good book.

10. Slow-cookers.

12. Quirky traditions that make your family special.

18. Google.

19. Holiday recipes that have been passed down through the family for generations.

20. Your health—even on days when it isn’t perfect.

22. Your children and your siblings

23. Baby giggles.

24. Puppies!

25. Friendships, new and old.

26. Your support system—be it at work, at home, or spread out all over the country.

27. The snooze button.

28. Laundry machines.

29. The people in your life who have been stand-in mothers and fathers whenever you’ve needed them.

30. Color-coordinated office supplies and freshly cut flowers.

In Celebration of a Fall Harvest

Here’s a recipe to warm everyone’s tummy and cause the children to giggle at the word-play:

Orange You Glad Thanksgiving Soup* Food Network

Prep Time: Five minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
1 medium onion, finely chopped
4 carrots, finely chopped
Salt and pepper
1/2 cup pulpy orange juice
2 boxes frozen butternut squash puree
2 or 3 cups chicken/turkey broth
Grated nutmeg
1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme leaves, for garnish
1 tablespoon orange zest, for garnish

Directions

1. Heat a soup pot over medium-high heat. Add 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil and 1 tablespoon of butter. When butter has melted, add the onion and carrots, and cook until vegetables are soft, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper. Deglaze with the orange juice and simmer for 1 to 2 minutes, scraping the bottom of the pot with a wooden spoon.

2. Transfer the mixture to a food processor or a blender. Puree the mixture until smooth, then return to pot over medium heat. To mixture, add the frozen butternut squash puree and the chicken broth and stir to combine. Adjust the seasoning. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let simmer for 10 minutes. Grate some fresh nutmeg and stir to combine.

3. Ladle soup into bowls and garnish with chopped thyme and orange zest.

This One's For the Dogs by @AuthorElsaKurt #RomanceGems

Hello to the dog days of summer!

I know many people are tired of summer by now, but it's my favorite season, so August can go as slowly as it wants in my book. In fact, if you're inclined to torture me for some reason, all you need to do is post a pumpkin spice anything meme on my Facebook page. Please don't, though. I'll cry.

When I heard about our theme, the Dog Days of Summer, the double meaning got me thinking of all the summers over my lifetime with our various dogs. (Not to mention the cats, fish, gerbils, rabbits, and hamsters.) Growing up around animals gave me a natural affinity and affection for them, so much so I can't imagine life without our furry brood. These days we have three Shih Tzus, the newest of which just came home on Monday and weighs a whopping 2.5 lbs. Her name is Lola (sing it, come on, I know you want to!)

My love for all things great and small led me to always expect that I'd grow up to work with animals in some capacity... but there were a few other career ideas, too. In no particular order, I wanted to be:

1) A movie star
2) Writer
3) Artist
4) Singer
5) Veterinarian
6) A person who lived on the beach
7) Dr. Doolittle
8) Grizzly Adams' wife
9) Zookeeper, but not for the monkeys (I didn't like monkeys & still don't).
10) Wonder Woman

Let's just say one out of ten, folks. One out of ten. Although, in about four years, number six will sort of come to fruition. In fairness, I suppose a few of my great ideas were a bit... unrealistic. I can't sing. Too shy to act. Moderate art skills at best. Wonder Woman, no elaboration needed. Same for Dr. Doolittle and Grizzly Adams' wife.

As for the more possible career aspirations, I took myself out of the running because - instead of college - I married, had children, and was a stay-at-home mom. Sure, I could've gone back to school, but that wasn't the choice I made. Bye-bye zookeeper job and veterinarian. All for the best, though. I can't even squash a bug, so there's no way I could ever euthanize an animal.

That leaves writer. For a very long time, I thought I'd edged myself out of that role, too. Then I decided it didn't. Once I gave myself permission to be more than I thought I was allowed to be, I discovered I could be all the things on that list, too. I could write myself - or a fictional version of myself - into those roles any time I want. Oh, and of course they always have animals!

If I had to pick one story out of them all though, A Billion Reasons is where I gave myself the most freedom to indulge in every young girl fantasy. Ironically, it's a short story in an anthology called Billionaire's Club. In it, my main male character, Griffin Pierce, is an old-money billionaire with a sprawling mansion in upstate New York. His philanthropist wife bred Irish wolfhounds and donated the money to charity, and when she passed away, Griff honored her legacy by continuing her operation. When he realizes he needs help, he hires the enigmatic dog behaviorist Jenna Maxwell.

The story, though short, is complex, romantic, and sexy, and as a bonus, it features six Irish wolfhounds with unique names: John Wayne, Cary Grant, William Powell, Jimmy Stewart, Myrna Loy, and Kate Hepburn. Basically, I got to fulfill a bunch of  "I wish's" in one shot. It has a May-December romance (my favorite) dogs (lots of dogs) a billionaire (because why not?) and a job I'd totally dig (dog behaviorist).

Here's an excerpt from A Billion Reasons:

Jenna slung her battered duffel bag over her tan, too thin shoulder and hopped off the last gritty step of the Greyhound bus. Her dark brown cowboy boots kicked up a cloud of burnt sienna dust. She grinned and shook her head. That sure isn’t city dust. She slid a black hair elastic off her wrist and whipped her long, pale-blonde hair into a quick ponytail as the bus door closed with a hydraulic hiss and lumbered away.
Her eyes swept over the acres of green grass, manicured shrubs, the horses grazing in the distance, and a lake peeking out from between the trunks of tall evergreen trees. All under an endless blue sky, unobstructed by skyscrapers. Jenna took a deep breath, letting the clean air fill her lungs. Then she promptly began coughing. Apparently, her city lungs were rejecting the fresh country air.
Someone was supposed to meet her at the bus stop—a groundskeeper or some other hired help—but she was alone by the winding dirt road.  Jenna sighed and squinted at the speck of white in the distance. Averly Estates. Her home for the next twelve weeks... unless she got caught out as a fraud.  If that happened, then... No, don't think about that. It'll be fine. Dog Behaviorist. Please, how hard could it be?
Anyhow, she hadn't completely lied on the application. Okay, dog walker might be a bit of a stretch from dog behaviorist. But with a little help from the internet and a fancy looking—albeit fake—certification award, Jenna thought she could pull it off.
She cupped her hand against her forehead and took another sweeping look across the estate.  A tree-lined, pea-gravel road branched off from the main road and wound a meandering path to the great house. She guessed it to be maybe a mile or so away. Nothing for a professional dog walker. I mean dog behaviorist.
Of course, she’d not factored in the blazing ninety-degree heat and one hundred percent humidity. Or the lack of skyscrapers for shade. Crap. Jenna dropped her duffel on a small patch of grass by the road, took a quick glance around, and peeled off her semi-sheer blouse. Then she rummaged around inside her bag for a tank top. Her arms were through the holes, and her head bowed when a deep voice called out.
“There are facilities at the main house, you know.”
Jenna froze, then hurriedly pull the top on. “What the hell—” In her haste, she yanked the elastic halfway out of her hair and had pulled the tank top on backward. She straightened, squinted around, and found the source of the voice. It was a ruggedly handsome, older man. Jenna guessed him to be in his mid-forties. Or a well-aged fifty. Jenna eyed him coolly. Damn, even the help dressed nicely here. Shit. Jenna’s worn-out duffel held a meager array of shorts, tank tops, bathing suit, vintage tees, one dress, and her undergarments. Her purse her all her otherworldly goods—toothbrush and toothpaste, mascara, one tube of plum spice lipstick, and seventy-seven dollars. Oh, and half a pack of cinnamon gum.
“You always sneak up on people like that?”
“No, Miss…”
“Maxwell. Jenna Maxwell,” she filled in. It was actually Jenna Caldwell, but he didn’t need to know that. The less anyone around here knew about Jenna, the better.
“Yes, of course. Jenna Maxwell, professional dog behaviorist from New York City. I apologize. I was resting against that tree over there and, well, I fell asleep,” he said with a shrug. He glanced down at her bag. “Is that all you brought?”
“All I need.” She added her own shrug and hoped it looked nonchalant rather than embarrassed.
The man stared at Jenna for a long moment. A faint smile pulled at the corners of his mouth. “Right, then. Follow me, please. You don’t mind if we walk, I hope?”
“No, no, not at all.” Hundred-degree temps, four-hour bus ride… a mile-long walk sounds peachy. Jenna suddenly realized that he never introduced himself. “And you are…”
“You can call me Griff.” He said nothing more.
Griff. Okay, I guess that’s all I’m getting.
Jenna sighed. This guy wasn’t the first uppity staff-of-rich-people she’d ever dealt with. Mrs. Lannister in her fancy penthouse had a secretary named Johan who treated Jenna like a peasant. All while ironing Mrs. Lannister’s underwear, no less. Despite Johan and his snooty attitude, things had been going well for Jenna. The anonymity of the bustling, never sleeping city had caused her to lower her guard enough to make acquaintances, if not friends. Ophelia from the bodega set aside the best mangos for her. Abram at the coffee shop remembered just how she liked her coffee. Though she always kept her head down and baseball cap on while walking the dogs, she began to occasionally smile and wave to the regular faces she saw. She should’ve known better. Familiarity breeds attachment. Attachment attracts questions, and questions attract trouble. Until she’d let her guard down, she’d weaved through New York like a ghost, unnoticeable in the sea of faces. Fake identifications, burner phones, library internet, and landlords who like cash. She’d lulled herself into believing that the city was perfect for anonymity—it was for nearly a year—but then she must’ve gotten sloppy.
Out of the blue, a small white envelope arrived at the Lannister’s penthouse addressed to Jenna. Johan handed it to her with a sniff and a reminder that ‘Mrs. Lannister’s penthouse was not her personal post office.’ With shaking hands, Jenna tore open the seal and read the note.

Hello, dearheart.
Time to come home.
-yours always, Me

He’d found her again. Like a relentless wolf tracking a scent, or a feline stalking its prey, he was edging closer. Worst of all—he wanted her to know he was coming for her. Jenna felt a chill run down her back and shot a surreptitious glance at Griff to see if he’d noticed. He did. She spoke quickly before he could question her.
“So, Griff. What’s the boss ladylike?”
“The…boss lady?” Griff turned slightly, his brows drawn together.
“Yeah, owner of this grand upstate estate. Ha—that’s funny. Upstate estate, sounds funny, right?” Jenna laughed alone. Griff raised an eyebrow at her.
Okay, note to self. Really good-looking, no sense of humor.
“What, may I ask, makes you believe the… boss is a she?”
Jenna had a smart retort ready, then realized that all along she’d just assumed it was a woman. She halted. From her purse, she pulled the printout of their last email. It stated confirmation of her employment, details of the job, and the address. Signed: G. Pierce.

Lazy Summer Afternoons by Nora LeDuc #Romance Gems

The summer I turned 13, the local movie theater announced they'd show beach-themed movies at Saturday matinees. Hot guys flexing muscles, tan girls showing off their two-piece bikinis--this sounded terrific to me and to my two best friends. I volunteered my mother as our chauffeur and crossed my fingers she'd agree when I asked her to drive us.

Thankfully, she did. So when the weekend rolled around, we headed to the big screen. My mom dropped us off by the ticket booth out front and reminded us she'd pick us up right there. Then we paid for our tickets and entered through the double glass doors. Inside, a cushy red carpet ran the length of the dim foyer. Posters of movie stars in their upcoming films decorated the walls. We paused and pointed out the ones we liked. Most of the movies had already played in better theaters, but we didn't care. We were in a magical world where any story was possible, and in our imaginations, we were the stars.

We bought our snacks and chose our seats on the side aisle. This way we could talk and glance at the incoming audience, hoping to spot boys! Sadly, although a mixed group filled up one third of the rows, there were no teenage males that day. Finally, the lights went down. Now if you follow our Gems Blog, you know that we have book boyfriends, male characters from the book that we love. Well, my friends and I had movie boyfriends. We also had a few rules about our process. You couldn't choose your boyfriend until the show started and you saw him on the screen. Once you did, the other two friends had to agree that you were a match. Luckily, this movie had three teen heartthrobs, which was perfect, one for each of us. Choosing was easy. I wanted the one I thought was cutest. No other qualifications mattered. Fortunately, this story had lots of cuties running around on the white sand and surfing on their boards. They also always gathered in the evenings by a fire with the girl of their dreams.

Truthfully, I remember little of the plots, but I do recall the fun we had together on those afternoons. Giggling, sighing, and ah-ing we became captivated by our fictional characters. And the following Saturday, we did it all again.

My Summer Reading List by Lucinda Race #RomanceGems

Hello again.

It’s Summer and it’s HOT!

So, for the months of June, July and August I’ve embarked on a personal reading challenge. To read at least one book from every author in the #RomanceGems group. Prior to deciding to make this a short-term goal I did have a reading goal on Good Reads. But I’ve gone from twenty-four books as my goal to adding twenty more. But where to begin.

As an author of ten books I have a favorite and I was sure the other amazing authors in our group did too, so I asked. Where do I begin?

So far, I’ve read Joan Reeves, Bonnie Edwards, Kathy Lawless, Elsa Kurt, Karen Kelly, Connie Vines, Jan Scarbrough and Kathryn Hills. Each novel or series of books I’ve read has been a wonderful diversion in the long wonderful days of summer.

I’ve been diligent to post reviews on Amazon, Goodreads and Bookbub to support this amazing and talented group of authors is very important to do. Writers supporting writers is critical as writing and editing is such a solitary pursuit.

My kindle is full of books to be read and up next is anyone’s guess. But I see some amazing books in my future. If you’re interested in my reviews check out my Goodreads page. Every word is honest and comes from the love of reading.

When I was telling a friend what I was doing she said it reminded her of the reading list she got from her teachers each summer. I had to laugh at the comparison but this is much better than the assignments of old. I know that as a romance novel junkie I’m going to spend the summer falling in love again and again.

Don’t forget to sign up for this month’s contest.

BEACHES and BOOK BOYFRIENDS is the Romance Gems Julytheme. Enter our drawing for a chance to win 1 of 3 Amazon Gift Cards and fun beach books too! Read the post, leave a comment, and enter the Rafflecopter Giveaway.

Until next time,
I wish you happiness.

It's Book Birthday Week @ElsaKurt #RomanceGems

Congratulations, It's A... Series!

Well, the beginning of one, that is. But since I've been talking almost nonstop about it, you probably knew it already. I suppose it's an obvious statement, but I love this story, this place so much. Chance, Connecticut and its residents may be fiction, but they are so real to me. Each character holds a special place in my heart. Here are a few of the people you'll meet and hopefully love as much as I do...

Mae...

William...

Feather Anne...

Bruce...

Rosabelle...

And So Many More!

Chance may be a small town, but it's got big-time drama. Take it from Mae herself...

In Chance, Connecticut, it’s about living the small-town life. Here everyone knows everybody’s business. Gossip and drama spreads like wildfire in this town.

But I’m happy here, content with my little café where locals come together. Even the rich wives-club has their own corner where they can sit around and swap gossip stories. Luckily, I’ve managed to stay off their radar…until a handsome writer arrives in town.

William is older, wiser, and nothing like any other man I’ve met. The attraction between us is instant, and totally unexpected.

While I try to ignore the connection we share, the entire town starts to notice. Suddenly my personal life has become the new topic of conversation.

A twenty-six-year-old falling for an older man is exactly the kind of gossip that can stir a lot of drama in Chance.

Question is, will our newfound love survive being the talk of the town?

In honor of Mae's Cafe release, I'm doing an EBOOK GIVEAWAY! To enter, click HERE

PLEASE DON’T SAY THAT! by Hannah Rowan

I’m a writer and writers are supposed to love words, so they say.  And I do, I really do.  It’s a thrill to find just the right word to express an idea.  It’s lovely to come across a word I’ve never heard before and to learn what it means.

But there are some words and phrases that make me grit my teeth and long to bash someone over the head with a shoe.  If I wore heels, I’d possibly even use a stiletto, but I doubt I’d hurt anyone with my Keds sneakers.  So I’ll just have to issue a heartfelt plea – don’t say these things in front of me or you’ll ruin my Zen.

I admit it’s irrational, but I can’t stand it when someone says they’re going to “sleep in.”  What does that even mean?  I adore the idea of sleeping LATE!  I hate to get up in the morning!  But sleep IN? In what, where?  Don’t say it, please!

My husband often tells me he’s going to “take a hot tub.”  I bet it’s obvious what I’m going to say.  Take it where?  Please don’t take the hot tub!  Go into it, and then leave it where it is so others can enjoy it later.

When someone asks how I’m doing, I’ll say “fine” or “great” or something along those lines.  But some people say, “I’m doing well.”  Yes, it’s grammatically correct.  But still, it always makes me pause and think that the person seems, well, kind of stuffy.

Then there are individual words that make me cringe.

For a long time it seems that the heroes in romance novels were extremely fond of “laving” various parts of the heroine’s body.  Though I haven’t encountered this in a while (Dare I hope it’s become outdated?) I can still recall my outrage every time I encountered this activity.  Because “lave” means “wash,” according to Webster.  Not quite the image the author had in mind, no doubt.

In no particular order, I can’t stand the words puke, zit, fart, and bolus.  Why bolus, you ask? I have no clue, but when my dentist once said I had a bolus of food stuck under my gum I wanted to retch (not puke, please!) not from the thought of the food itself but from the sound of the word.  I’m not sure why all of these words describe somewhat unpleasant bodily functions.  I have nothing against the functions themselves.  Except bolus, which falls into another category entirely.

I once had a friend who couldn’t stand the word “bosom.”  I delighted in singing “Rock my Soul in the Bosom of Abraham” endlessly to her.  Maybe my aversion to the above words and phrases is payback of some sort.  One never knows.

SECOND CHANCE ROMANCE AND OTHER TROPES @kathleenlawless #romancegems

I really love discussing popular romance tropes with readers and other authors.  Trends come and go over the years, but there are at least a dozen or two that never seem to go out of style, and it is always interesting to see how authors take these timeless favorites and put a fresh spin on them.

If you list some of your favorite tropes in the comment portion or in our readers and writer’s group I’ll share them in a future blog, just for fun.

Romance Gems authors and readers.  https://www.facebook.com/groups/332592250930075

One trope that never seems to fall out of favor is the ‘Second Chance’.  This is where the hero and heroine had a relationship years ago that didn’t work out for various reasons.  When they meet again tension and conflicts escalate due to their past, rife with hurt, distrust and betrayal.

Throwing in a child one or the other didn’t know about always ups the stakes.  I'll never forget one book where it was the mother who didn’t know about the child and returned to town when he was a teen.  Did I ever admire that particular author’s skill in pulling that one off.

There are no secret babies in any of the books in my upcoming historical series, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, but Brody’s Bride does open with the hero and heroine meeting again for the first time in ten years.

To whet your appetite for the series and introduce you to the main players I have penned a short story called Before the Brides.  This story won’t be offered for sale but is available for free download to anyone who signs up for my monthly Reader News where I tell you about special fan pricing, free books and other good stuff.

Wearin' the Green @kathleenlawless #romancegems

My family originally hailed from Ireland in the 1880’s.  They landed on the east coast of Canada and eventually migrated as far west as they could go.  I guess the ocean was in their blood, as it is in mine.  Dad is turning ninety this year, and years ago started a tradition of buying me a card each year to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.  As you can see, I have amassed quite a collection, which I proudly display each year.  I get a little emotional when I think, one year, there will no longer be a card in the mail from him.

Dad was always a big fan of my writing and Callie’s Honor is his favorite of my stories.  He doesn’t really know what Bookbub is, but he was excited to hear they will be featuring his favorite book on sale for .99 the day before St. Patrick’s Day.  Sounds like a good omen, wouldn’t you say?  Here’s an excerpt.

Rafe angled Callie's chair around till they faced each other
and he had one knee on either side of her. "You don't
trust me, Callie. Now just why exactly is that?"
Callie averted her gaze.
His free hand snaked between them. Thumb and
fore- finger pinched her chin, turning her face back around to
his. "I expect an honest answer now."
Eyes steely, chin thrust forward, Callie met his gaze.
Her skin burned every place Rafe held her; "I don't trust
any man."
She expected him to release her like a hot rock.
Instead, he took his time about it. Slowly his fingers
uncurled from around her wrist. Slower yet the fingers
imprisoning her face gentled, till their touch bordered on
a caress. "Why's that?"
Feeling her hands tremble slightly, she knotted them
in her lap, away from his gaze. "Never met a man yet who
gave me any reason to trust him. Including my pa and my
older brother."
"I see." Rafe sat back in his chair and crossed his arms
over his chest. "In that case, apology accepted." He
extended his right hand toward her, leaving Callie little
choice but to slide her hand inside his. She was conscious
of the warmth of his skin, the callused, leathery feel of his
palm and fingertips. The sensations chased clear up her
arm in the most unsettling of ways.
He didn't let her go right away. Instead, he raised her
hand to his lips and pressed a kiss on the spot where he'd
removed the sliver. Then he did something that caught
Callie totally off guard. He guided her wounded thumb
slowly to outline the contour of his lips, bottom and top.
Callie felt as if melted wax spilled through her limbs in
a heated rush. Opening his lips, he pulled
her thumb just inside the hot moist cavity of his mouth and
gave a slow gentle suck that she felt clear down to her toes.
"Since you don't trust me, anyway," Rafe said, his
breath touching her forehead like steam rising from hot
water. "I guess it won't make much difference if I kiss
you."
"Don't." The word barely escaped from the tightened
muscles of her throat.
With one finger beneath her chin he tilted her face up
toward his. "Any woman smells this good, she needs kissing
if only as a thank you from the lucky man close
enough to notice. "
Callie trembled clear down inside her boots as he lowered
his head to hers.
