My Top Ten Favorite Secondary Characters by @KaraONealAuthor #RomanceGems
But...he's not the focus of this romance. He is a secondary character and holds a supporting role.
But, let me tell you, it was fun writing each one of his scenes. He's grumpy. Abrupt. Blunt. And...he has three sisters. They all live with him. And run his general store.
In this one book, he ends up walking each of his sisters down the aisle. The drama that enfolds throughout this romance just makes him ALL kinds of happy! Ha!
So, this got me to thinking...are there more secondary characters I like written by other authors? Hmmm...
I pondered this for awhile. I love to rank my likes. I give it a lot of thought, and this list was no different. Now, some of you might not consider some of these secondary characters, which is fine. I suppose my criteria could be wrong, but I couldn't stop myself from making my list.
So, without further ado, here are my favorite secondary characters:
1. Jane Bennett from Pride and Prejudice -- because she is Lizzie's touchstone
2. Mrs. Jennings from Sense and Sensibility -- because she is hilarious
3. Elizabeth McKenna from The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society -- because she has an amazing amount of courage
4. Neville Longbottom from Harry Potter -- because he is courageous and kills the snake
5. Rudy Steiner from The Book Thief -- because his cheerfulness and exuberance and sweetness during Nazi-controlled Germany made my heart squeeze every time
6. Miss Havisham from Great Expectations -- because her eccentricity was so sad and my heart broke for her
7. Wulfric Bedwyn from Slightly Married -- because, well, he just stole the show with his intelligence, his presence, and his melancholy demeanor
8. Deets from Lonesome Dove -- because he was always so cheerful no matter what happened and because he wore pants made of patches
9. Dallas Leigh from Texas Destiny -- he loses his bride to his brother, but still steps to the side with kindness and humor and I fell in love!
10. Mr. Collins from Pride And Prejudice -- because he is amazingly ridiculous but I still hope he's happy with Charlotte
And there you go! It was hard. I have an honorable mention, though...Boo Radley from To Kill A Mockingbird because he saved the kids and was so mysterious. (I just couldn't stop myself from adding one more.)
My character, Thomas Miller, does get his own story. But that's a post for later.
Now it's your turn! Tell me your favorites in the comments and one lucky person will a free book from my Texas Brides of Pike's Run Series! Make sure you leave your email address and spell it out, too!
After Eulalie Miller was left at the altar, her younger sisters, Susannah and Lucy, pledge to never forsake her, not suspecting the vow would label them "Spinster Sisters". Neither did they realize Eulalie would become so formidable, the male population would be too scared to darken their doorstep. But, while Eulalie makes it her mission to protect her sisters from men, she can't stop Brady Callahan, the saloon owner, from turning Susannah's head. Nor can she keep Harold Dawson, recently widowed, from stealing Lucy's heart. And when Richard Morrison comes calling for Eulalie, expecting courtship, marriage, and her love, Eulalie’s world is turned on its axis.
As the "Spinster Sisters" tumble into romance, the people of Pike’s Run might have to seek a new title for them. One of distinction and hope…
The Miller Brides.

The Long Hot Summer #LucindaRace
Hello again,
Have you enjoyed your summer so far? We’ve been busy gardening and installed a split rail fence around the garden with chicken wire to protect the garden for next year from the darn bunnies. Now don’t get me wrong they’re cute but they decimated my spinach, green beans and some lettuce too. Daughter #2 brought me buckets of her special compost for my tomato plants and I have no idea what was in it but WOW things are definitely looking up in the garden. This was the first year we started composting although I’ve been gardening for years. I guess the great pause was good for something, my garden. I’ve been sharing pictures of flowers, tomatoes and the pups on social media so if you’re curious feel free to follow me to see what goes on in my little plot of the world.
Oh, and did I tell you the bears have been coming around on a pretty regular basis. Not sure why they’re finding their way into town but here they come. So extra care is taken when we go out with the little dogs.
In book news – In just a couple of weeks I’m sending the first book in The Crystal Lake Series, Blush, to my editor for her to help me smooth out any rough edges. It has been a book that I thought was finished and then based on feedback from my critique partner, beta readers and trusted family members I had to rework a few sections. My goal is to always release the very best book I can. I hope you find it will be worth the wait. Projected release is January 2021.
Follow me on social media or join my Lucinda Heart Racers Reader's Group to keep up with all the details!
Until next month, happy reading!

The Bloom of Love @LucindaRace #Romancegems
I’ve been mulling over this month’s blog post since the moment our theme was announced. Tree, shrubs and flowers are in bloom around my home and so are my allergies. We have been dealing in our own ways, with the world around us – but the one constant in all our lives is love.
Starting from when we’re born our lives are filled with love from our family. We continue to discover the wonder of it again and again. With the first blush of romantic love we have a sense that we can conquer the world. The rush of emotion you feel when you meet your partner, the instant bond when you hold your child in your arms and that moment your fur-baby lavishes you with affection. In those first heady moments we know in our hearts there isn’t an obstacle to large we can’t overcome.
Love gives us strength to face whatever lays ahead of us. We draw strength from it. I am a romantic at heart on all levels. Love gives me strength. I have faith I will never run out of love, it is like the magic well, the more I give the more I have to give. Love is a like my favorite rose, ever blooming in my heart. My hope for you is to take stock and discover that romance and love are in full bloom all around you.
On May 7, I released my 11th book, The Matchmaker and The Marine. Here is the opening scene.
Melinda flipped her planner shut after drawing a heart next to the two names on the page on the notepaper. Another success. The strains of the “Wedding March” played by a string quartet filled the small flower-filled chapel. Guests rose from their seats to watch the petite bride glide down the aisle toward her handsome groom. Across the aisle in a pew, a tall, well-built man with blonde hair cropped military style and molten brown eyes locked on hers. He gave Melinda a half nod before his gaze followed the bride.
The pastor’s deep voice filled the room as he asked everyone to take their seats. He then turned to the couple to perform the ceremony. After the newly married couple kissed, Melinda followed other guests in the receiving line to the bride and groom.
She beamed. “Stacey and Will, it was a beautiful ceremony.” Stacey was radiant. Will’s arm was curled around his new wife, holding her close to his side. “Melinda, this day wouldn’t have been possible without you.” Stacey lovingly gazed at Will. “Thank you for introducing us.”
Melinda kissed her cheek. “It was my pleasure.” Will lifted Stacey’s hand to his lips, grazing her ring finger. “I will tell all my single friends if they’re looking for love to give you a call.” His eyes twinkled. “You certainly have a knack for matchmaking.”
“You two made my job easy.” She looked over her shoulder. “You have more guests to greet, but I’ll see you during the reception.”

As she crossed the parking area to the reception hall she daydreamed of how nice it would be to take off her pumps and walk barefoot. She reached for the brass knob on the carved wood door. Before she could turn the knob, it burst open. She took a step back. Her heel caught a crack in the stone step. She began to fall backward when strong hands caught her and held on tight.
A deep voice next to her ear said, “It’s okay, I’ve got you.” Melinda looked up into warm brown eyes. It was the man from the chapel.
“Um, thank you.” She smoothed her hand over her simple navy-blue dress and then pushed a curl behind her ear. “I’m not sure what happened.”
“It looks like your heel got caught.” She gave him a small smile. “It’s a good thing you were there to catch me.”
With a slight stiff bow, he said, “Adam Bell, at your service, ma’am.”
Until next time, I wish you love. Lucinda

What's Old is New Again by Nancy Fraser #romancegems
I can only write for so long. And, unfortunately, I'm struggling to meet the number of hours I once spent at the computer. I'm still meeting deadlines...we do have to stay professional. However, any thought of a new project has gone the way of saddle shoes and rotary dial phones. (Yes, I'm that old!) So what does a writer do when she has less interest in writing?
For me, I turn to other media. In the past couple of months, I've revisited a number of old favorites. For instance...
On my trusty DVD:
I've rewatched all four seasons of my favorite 1990 romantic comedy/adventure, Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman. The writers of this series did a brilliant job of building and sustaining sexual tension between the two main characters. The "will they or won't they" dynamic was evident in every episode and paired perfectly with family-friendly Superhero action for a very entertaining program.
At the moment, I'm four seasons into The West Wing. Probably my all time favorite drama, political or otherwise. The characters were so well formed, so cohesive...even when they were at each others' throats. Actor Martin Sheen's absolutely stunning performance as President Josiah Barlett was a perfect representation of an "imperfect" man striving to do the right thing. Sometimes he failed, and sometimes he succeeded beyond what you thought was possible. The revolving door of impressive guest stars only added to an already stellar cast. With three more seasons to go, I'm hoping we get sprung before I get to the end. However, I'll watch it anyway.
On my full bookshelf:
While I still have a number of newer romances to read (quite a few by our Romance Gems authors), I took comfort in revisiting a number of my older favorites.
Probably my absolute favorite contemporary romance novel of all time: Chain Lightning by the amazing Elizabeth Lowell. Now here was an author who knew how to write steamy love scenes BEFORE they became the norm. Combined with a heart-tugging plot with tortured heroine, it is the ultimate hero/heroine escape.
I've had my autographed copy of this book for over thirty years and I still read it at least once per year. It's become a birthday tradition.
As for a trip down historical romance memory lane, you can't go wrong with A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. Another writing masterpiece, this perfect mix of time travel and history takes me on a great ride every time I re-read it.
If you're a fan of hunky historical heroes and feisty heroines, this book has it all.
And, on my Bose speakers:
Another trip down memory lane for sure. I've been rediscovering the music I grew up on. I just finished listening to The Beatles 1. This album brings back memories of the first concert I ever attended at Detroit's Olympia Stadium. I rode three city buses to get there and three to get back. And it was worth every minute. However, as big a fan as I was, I still didn't understand the screaming, crying and fainting.
A bit more modern, but equally enteraining, The Classics, by the amazingly talented a capella group, Pentatonix. One of the tracks from this album ties in perfectly to that trip down memory lane with their rendition of the late John Lennon's Imagine. It speaks to me specifically because it deals with the issues of acceptance despite our differences and our need to come together in times of stress.
Please enjoy!

Spring, Stress, and Salvation by Peggy Jaeger
There's a boatload of bad news in the world these days. I don't need to tell you that. You're all sentient beings who watch television, read papers, and follow social media. I want to talk, though, about what all this bad news, these horrible images, feelings of isolation, doubt, and just plain terror are doing to your body.
Yes, I said ARE doing, not CAN do. Unless you're the type of personality who never lets anything outside of your body effect what's on the inside, then you're experiencing some type of physical or mental stress right now.
As an old nurse who was a devotee of the Florence Nightingale school of health care, I know what stress does to a person and how, if it's not curbed, can lead to a slew of longterm and chronic health disorders.
So, first a primer: What is stress, really? Put bluntly, stress is a physical, mental, or emotional event that causes tension on the mind and/or body. Stress can be caused by external forces (from the environment, psychological, or social situations) or internal ones (illness).
Well, I would say without a doubt that what we're all living through right now is the very definition of stress.
So, what does stress do to you? In essence, it can effect almost every organ and system in your body. Mentally and emotionally, it can leave you with symptoms of irritability, anxiety, depression, headaches.
And then another. A few seconds or minutes of deep breathing every day in a quiet place without distractions goes a long way in alleviating mental stress.
Now, as a writer I would be remiss if I didn't mention one other way to alleviate stress - and in my writer's mind, the most important one:
READ!!
Preferably something you like, as in, oh I don't know...books? Romance books? One of MY romance books, maybe?
Hee hee.
Read something light and airy like chick lit. Or fun and flirty like a good RomCom. Or, if you really want to stimulate those endorphins and get that oxytocin flowing, something dark and sexy and...erotic.
I've got a new Sweet romance coming out next month titled VANILLA WITH A TWIST that might be just the thing you need to rid yourself of that toxic stress. It's part of my publisher's new summer series called ONE SCOOP OR TWO. VANILLA WITH A TWIST is about a workaholic engineer and an ice cream parlor owner. It's the perfect blend of angst, romance, second chances, and ultimately an HEA.
