What's Your Romance Catnip? by Laura Hunsaker

What do you love in a book that you would never like in real life?

Sometimes when I read a book, there's a scene that happens that I absolutely love, but in my real life? I would hate.

Here's a great example: I love when a hero rips off the heroine's panties. Like seriously, yes. I want that! But in real life? I do not want that. Holy cow my undies are expensive, and you had better not be ripping off my clothes. Buttons flying, panties ripping, just no.

Another is when they are so wrapped up in each other that they forget about everything they are doing and just have to have the sexytimes right now. In real life? If I were making my husband dinner and he tried to start stuff with me, I would smack his hand with a spatula lol. No one wants a burnt lasagna, babe.

Or gosh, even a singer singing to his heroine...I had that happen once in real life and it was awkward and uncomfortable for me. But in a book? I eat that up.

Or pirates! Oh my goodness I love a good pirate romance, but in real life? No thank you. Obviously I won't ever meet one, but I feel safe in saying they wouldn't be my jam.

Time travel! My goodness, I would love to time travel back to the Highlands of Scotland several hundred years ago, however...realistically? If that could happen? Yeah I'd probably die. Whether I was burnt as a witch, or stung by a bee and didn't have my epi pen, I'm under no illusions that time travel would be as sexy as books make it out to be.

Alpha males, jocks, nerds, hackers, celebrities...what's your catnip in fiction, but in your real life you would absolutely hate?

Check out my Time Travel Highland Warriors. This is a duology with both Highland Destiny and Highland Games in one!

Is Romance Dead? by Laura Hunsaker

I just read an article by the L.A. Times that asked "Will Kissing Ever Make a Comeback" and had the image of two metal figures wearing masks and kissing. (link to article here).

Is this a thing? How would that work?

He inhaled the scent of her hand sanitizer, mmm...lemon. She placed her gloved hand against his cheek. They gently pressed their masks together...

Okay obviously I'm being facetious here, but as a romance writer, I can't help but think about how I would write a romance and incorporate it.

I like escapism, so in my stories, I don't address it, but maybe I should? What say you all? Should our Romances being written right now reflect everything going on?

While I may have used a wee bit of snark at first, I wonder if I could make it work?

Lucy walked in the door from her first day back at work, instantly took off her mask and tossed it in the laundry pile. Washing her hands she called for her dog. Bruce, her lab, was ready to go.

"Who wants a walk? Who's a good boy who wants a walk?" She stuffed her mini hand sanitizer in her pocket, and grabbing his leash, she took Bruce out for his evening walk.

Once out on the trail, Lucy saw her neighbor Van out with his dog. Every day for a couple months now, they'd wave at each other and smile. But not today. She was prepared to finally talk to him. With restaurants being closed to inside dining, she was planning to grab a to go order and hope he wouldn't mind sitting on her porch. The weather was beautiful and she was excited to talk to someone after being cooped up for so long.

"Hi Lucy!"

His mask was his favorite hockey team and she thought that it was cute how every one of his masks she had seen had all been different masks for the same team. Hers had cupcakes on them, because she just really thought it was cute.

"Hi Van! Hey, I don't know if you're up to it, but I was thinking of grabbing some dinner from Apple Garden tonight, and thought maybe you would want to join me? We could eat on my porch and you can bring your dog."

He smiled, she could tell because his eyes crinkled above his mask. "That sounds like a lot more fun than my night of streaming that new movie everyone is talking about and some leftovers."

"It's a date."
***

I guess it wouldn't be that difficult to add in some of today's happenings without it taking over the story. What do you think? Would you prefer escapism? Would you mind seeing a tiny bit of reality mixed in? Will kissing ever make a comeback ;)

If you're in the mood for something you can really escape into, my Time Travel Romance Highland Eclipse is only $.99

What's In a Name? by Laura Hunsaker

When I first started writing as a teen, I picked my crush's name, or my best friends' names for my stories. As I matured I realized I can't obviously name each hero after my crushes, or really, after people I know. But since my first book was a Scottish Romance, I needed a name that wasn't Brett, or Justin, or Logan. So I scoured census lists, archives, historical documents, you get the idea. I came up with common and true to the time names. I think that's why we see so many similar names in Scottish Romances.

But lately, I've been writing Contemporary Romantic Suspense and Hockey Romances, and I can have more freedom. Hello Jaxxon! But one thing I've noticed is that in many contemporary romances, the hero is in his thirties and his name is Aidan, Ryder, Stryker, or Jaxxon (yep, even I got caught up!), or some other name that on Twitter we've dubbed "Romance Hero Names." I love all of those names, but I teach kindergarten in my day-job, and when I have a 5 year old in my class who has the same name as my hero, it pulls me out of the story. The age feels wrong.

I tried really hard to make all the heroes in their thirties have names that I remember from high school. In fact, I had two Kyles! Oops! But I wanted a 38 year old hero to have a name that would have been popular in 1981, not 2020.

So where are all the Chrises, the Jasons, the Scotts? Where are the Tiffanys and Brittanys?

So now I turn it over to you? Do you have a favorite Romance Hero Name? Do you even notice if a name feels too trendy for a thirty-something year old?

Don't forget to enter the monthly giveaway!

And in the spirit of hero names, check out my latest book Dark Past with a hero named Kyle and a heroine named Kate.

Author Spotted In the Wild! by Laura Hunsaker

Every year my local library has a Local Author Showcase. It's been an amazing experience and I can't wait for this one.

If you're in the Las Vegas area March 28, you should stop by! I'll be selling copies of Icing the Puck and Going All In. The New York Empires series is a hockey series with romance, with a slightly paranormal edge.

In my latest, I'm joining Isabo Kelly, Stacey Agdern, and Heather Lire once more to bring you three new stories in the Empires world.

Each book has 3 stories, all stories play out with each other. You get to see the team from each author's point of view. We all worked really hard to make sure the books work well with each other and the timelines flow. You'll see major events from one story from a different point of view in another story. I think it's a really neat way to write a series.

Coming soon...very very soon...

We have the third New York Empires book coming out! Roughing It is currently undergoing it's second round of edits, so I'll have a solid date very soon. (keep your eyes on this site, I'll be showing you all the amazing cover here first!)

Guys...werewolf hockey players, female goalies, twin brothers who hide secrets from each other...there's so much going on and throughout the anthology? The Empires are looking for a new goal tender.

So the awesome thing about this book signing is that I'll be selling the first 2 books in the Empires series, and hopefully it'll create interest in Roughing It.

Here are some pictures from the past couple of Showcases, and don't forget to enter the monthly giveaway!

Between Once Upon a Time and HEA by Laura Hunsaker

Around Valentine's Day we always see these awful articles about "Trashy" Romance novels, "bodice rippers," and Fabio. Fabio hasn't even been on a Romance cover since the early '90s. I mean, seriously?

So I wanted to try the opposite of one of those articles.

I want to talk about how we are the opposite of the stereotypical bodice ripper with Fabio starring front and center. Let's talk about how different Romance novels are.

One thing I love is how much variety there is in the Romance World (or Romancelandia as we affectionately call it).  If you want a book about a surfer heroine who time travels to Scotland and meets her hero? There's a book for that (Highland Games by Laura Hunsaker). What if you want a Navy SEAL whose platoon was sold out and is trying to clear his name but also has an investigative journalist dogging his steps? There's a book for that (Off the Grid by Monica McCarty). What if you want a fallen woman who was done wrong but her hero respects her and shows her what love really is? There's a book for that (The Governess Affair by Courtney Milan FREE). What if you want a hero who looks like bearded Captain America who falls for the good girl? There's a book for that! (Tikka Chance on Me by Suleikha Snyder). What if you want a vampire/ angel/viking who falls for a human lawyer, well, you guessed it, there's a book for that (Kiss of Temptation by Sandra Hill). If you want a book that has demons, angels, magic, and an Arabic feel to the mythology, there's a book for that! (Fate's Match by Elysabeth Grace). If you want it, I'm sure there's a book for that.

One thing you'll notice, no matter how much people cry "formulaic!" or "cliche!" or "tropes!" is that even the ones that have similar tropes, are different. It's what's in the middle that's important.

If you want a book about a damsel in distress rescued by her prince, it's out there. But...what if your damsel in distress rescues herself?

What if, in between your "Once upon and time," and your "they lived happily ever after," something unexpected happens? Something that sets the reader's world on its axis. Something that creates a romance fan for life. This is what we Romance fans live for; that middle part, that in between part. I know each Romance novel I pick up is a promise of "happily ever after," but it's how those characters get to that point that keeps me flipping pages. That journey is what makes each Romance novel different, and that difference should be celebrated instead of poked fun at for clicks during Valentine's Day.

Instead of trashy and lurid, Romance novels are uplifting and happy. They can be everything. They can be empowering, entertaining, and enjoyable. They can be intense, dark, light, easy, fluffy, and fun. I really wish people would leave the stereotypes out of the picture.

We've even taken back the term "bodice ripper." (quick side note: If you ever get a chance to visit L.A. you should stop by the Ripped Bodice, a bookstore dedicated only to Romance, and seriously, they are amazing! They do a lot of author events, and a lot of good in the community).

And we not only have taken back bodice rippers, we're taking back Valentine's Day. We refuse to let trashy clickbait articles about guilty pleasures take over a day celebrating love. You want to celebrate love by reading your favorite comfort read, go for it. You want to read something new and out of your comfort zone, do it! You want to read an old bodice ripper? You rip that bodice! But you want to poke fun at Romance novels when you haven't read one since 1972? Nope. Come back after you've read anything written in the past 5 years. You need some recs? I gotchu.

Here's a twitter account you might enjoy, especially since it's Black History Month here in America: @WOCInRomance

And Sarah MacLean has a great list here

Bedtime Stories by Laura Hunsaker

When I was a little girl, my dad would read to me every night. I remember his favorite books to read to me were The Wind In the Willows and The Hobbit. I'm sure you can guess that I absolutely love reading. Thanks Dad :)

Now that I have my own children, I carried that love of bedtime stories through to them. My now teens loved bedtime. They knew it meant snuggles and stories and sleep.

I have a six year old as well and while she absolutely loves reading at bedtime, she also loves stalling her bedtime. Her latest requests the past couple of weeks have been to help her change her dreams.

Well, luckily mama is a storyteller.

So instead of telling her that her dreams aren't real, monsters aren't real, here's a cup of water, now go to bed kid (which is what I'm thinking), I say, "Okay let's see what we can do about those dreams.

The first couple nights were flops. I tried to tell original Once Upon A Time stories. "Once upon a time, there was a princess who couldn't sleep." This is where she'd stop me with an eyeroll and an, "Ugh Mooooom. No not that way."

So last week we figured out the magic. I told her to imagine a princess who had superhero powers, but everyone knows that princesses can't have super powers. So she has to hide them while she's at princess school. But she's been hiding them for so long that she doesn't know how to use them, because while princess school is great for teaching her how to be a princess, it's not so great at teaching her how to use her powers.

So every day, she stays late at the school library searching books for help. Searching for other people who have powers. Searching for a way to control her magic. And that's where the prince found her. She was levitating a stack of books to her table one night when he walked in needing help with his homework.

But he didn't scream or freak out because the prince had his own secret he'd been keeping. He had a super power too.

We're now a week deep into this story.

It's sort of like a choose your own adventure story for her. I start part of it, then I let her fill in the blanks on things like what super powers this princess actually has, or what she's doing at school when she's discovered. Most recently she decided that the prince needs a second superpower. But it isn't anything so mundane as flying or super strength. Oh no. My baby girl gave her prince the power to talk to animals. And he has an animal sidekick, of course. His sidekick is a "trash panda" (a raccoon for those of us who don't speak internet meme). Tonight we're going to find out if they get into crazy hijinks, or if they help solve crimes. Or maybe like Scooby Doo, they'll do both?

I started writing down the main points so I wouldn't forget them, night after night. Who knows? Maybe she and I will wind up actually writing it one day? But for right now, bedtime is a teeny bit easier, and hopefully her dreams are too.

If you want to check out my other "bedtime stories" but for grown-ups ;) here's a link to my website's book page, and the first bit of my latest book, a Romantic Suspense called Dark Past.

Chapter One:
The bell above her door jingled, signaling another customer. It had been a long, busy day, and was almost closing time, but Kate was up for it. She needed this job, and the owner, Corie, had told her she could never turn away a customer.
All the other coffee shops in this small logging town, all two of them, closed down by noon. But not the Coffee Chaser. Named for Corie's husband, who'd been a chaser in the logging industry, the café was the closest thing to a mainstream coffee shop this small town would ever see. After a lifetime in logging country, and with her husband driving her crazy in his retirement, she'd bought out an old one bedroom cabin with an upstairs apartment and converted it into a coffee shop.
For Kate Landry, this small café was her first real job in a while, and she needed it to be a success. She needed this job. She needed the money. Long-term wasn't really her thing, not anymore. She wasn't living the dream or anything, but it would do. For now, she needed this.
Game face.
She turned with a smile. "Hi, what can I get for you?"
Her smile froze. She locked eyes with a man whose broad shoulders took up the doorway and whose eyes pinned her in place.
His eyes were green. Huh. She'd never met a guy with green eyes before. Not like this. They were clear and bright and as green as fresh spring grass. That was stupid, she mentally berated herself. The second she spouted poetry to herself, she realized she needed to snap out of it.
He didn't speak, not at first. She cleared her throat, which seemed to kick start him as well. He
stepped fully into the coffee shop, and walked up to the counter.
"Coffee. Black."
The bell jingled again, and the new customer who entered also blocked the setting sun from the room. He was bigger than the man with the green eyes, but they were similarly built. Her green-eyed customer stiffened and turned at the bell, but he relaxed when he seemed to recognize the newcomer. They shook hands and did that guy thing where they one-arm hug. Ahh, so they did know each other.
"Coffee's up."
He turned his startling green eyes back to her. "How much do I owe you?" Oh heavens, his voice was deep, gravelly, and so sexy. Oh boy, she was in trouble. Words at this point would be good.
"That'll be two fifty." Surprisingly, her voice was steady, if slightly husky.
Their fingers brushed as they exchanged money, and she bit the inside of her cheek to keep from gasping.
She turned to his friend while she put the money in the drawer. "Hi, can I help you?"
"Yes ma'am, I'll have a caramel macchiato with extra whip cream."
Expecting a comment about the froufrou drink, she began making the espresso while shamelessly eavesdropping on the men. She was surprised, though, that they went straight into whatever their business was.
They were talking about a mission. That was all she caught before the sound of the milk frother covered their words.
A mission? What mission? Were they cops? Did cops go on missions? Trying to catch their next words, she almost scalded her fingers. Crap, pay attention, Kate.
Kate was cursed with an overactive imagination, and the curiosity gene only made it worse. She wanted to know what they were talking about. The biggest downfall to her hyperactive imagination was that it could very easily turn into paranoia. She had her own dark secrets and knew all too well how quickly a situation could go from good to hell in a New York minute.

She really had to stop eavesdropping.

Snowed In With One Bed by Laura Hunsaker

A little while back there was a silly game going around the internet that looked a little like this:

Me: Ugh a Rom Com where there's only one bed and they're snowed in, how cliche.
Also Me: OMG a Rom Com where there's only one bed and they're snowed in! I love this cliche!

Me: Ugh She's leaving the big city to go home for the holidays to find herself
Also Me: OMG she's leaving the big city to go home for the holidays to find herself!

This made me giggle any time I saw a new one pop up. But it got me to thinking. With Hallmark, Netflix, Lifetime, and all the other channels that do the heartwarming Holiday Romances, why do they work for us?

They may be a bit tropey, but I think that's the draw. The same as any good book, we see recurring themes. There's the girl goes home for the holidays, boy is local and they hate each other at first but fall in love. Especially when there's only one bed ;)

There's the ol' meddling aunt/granny/friend who matchmakes with two unwilling people who then fall for each other.

There's the secret baby trope, the second chance at romance trope, I could go on and on. I love a good romance, whether it's a book or a movie, give me all the happily ever afters!

I think my favorite thing about these movies is that I know there's going to be a happy ending. They're fun, they're happy, and you know what you're in for. Whether the hero is a small town veterinarian and the heroine is a big city lawyer, or the hero is the local sheriff and the heroine is a baker, you just know they're going to have a happily ever after. And isn't that the best feeling?

That's the best part! You know what you're getting. The promise of a happy movie with a happy ending.

I'm so ready for the weekend when I can stay in my pajamas and binge watch the new movies. How about you? Any favorite movies you watch this time of year? What's your favorite trope? I have to admit I do love the "one bed, snowed in" trope.

My latest book Dark Past deals with a small town, a startling secret, and absolutely a happily ever after.

Comfort Reads by Laura Hunsaker

Lately I feel like I've been in a reading slump. You know, that feeling where you keep picking up a new book and it just doesn't click for you?
I've started three or four books and haven't been able to finish them. I hate when that happens!

The worst part is that I'm pretty sure I'll like the books, I'm just not in the mood for them. Being a moody reader can sure stink.

Some friends and I were talking about this just the other day. Sometimes when I DNF (do not finish) a book, it's hard to put it down. I want to push on, to persevere....but should my favorite hobby be something I have to push myself to do? I need to make myself understand it's okay to set a book aside for later. I have a great example of that. I have been trying to read Nora Roberts' The Three Fates for months now. It just isn't clicking for me. Typically I enjoy her books, especially the ones that are connected like this is, and yet...I can't get past the 4th chapter.

So what do you do when you're stuck like that?

Do you switch up genres? Force yourself to finish whatever you pick up?

For me, I tend to go for a comfort read. Comfort reads are old favorites that I know I already love, and that won't let me down.

Some of my comfort reads are:

Anything Ilona Andrews. I just re-read the Hidden Legacy series, and it's one that gets better each time.

Cynthia Eden's Devil In Disguise is so intense and surprising and wonderful.

Sarah MacLean"s Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake I can't tell you how many times I've read that book.

Monica McCarty's Highland Warrior is another I've worn out re-reading.

And our own Bonnie Edwards' Love In a Pawn Shop

So tell me, what are your comfort reads? Are you a moody reader?

Don't forget to enter our November GIVEAWAYS for one of five gift cards! Direct link to the Rafflecopter here

If you're looking for your new comfort read, look no further! Dark Past is out now!

Come Plan With Me by Laura Hunsaker

A couple of years ago I was having trouble writing. I wasn't making words happen, and I needed something to keep me accountable. I had so many blogger friends showing off their adorable planners all over Instagram, and I finally just took the plunge. I used coupons at Michael's and free printables online and next thing I knew, I'd set up a writing planner.

I stared with just basic word counts, but it was boring. This was supposed to be fun! An incentive to help me want to hit my goal! So I poked around the internet and found some cute ideas I tweaked to fit my needs. My favorite is where I made a page where I fill in tetris pieces if I hit my word goal. It was so fun and cute and it made writing feel less like work and more like fun. I've started a new one now, and I'm incorporating more of my daily activities into it so I can fill it up faster.

This is my basic weekly planner spread. It's a bunch of blank pages (kind of like my latest work in progress!) My usual method of having post its all over the place with ideas for my story isn't the most organized, so I try to keep anything I'd scribble on a post it in here. I keep things like what music I write to, any plot ideas, and my word count.

This is what it looks like after I've gotten the stickers out.

As you can see the stickers add some color and personality. I don't go wild, although if you look up planners online you will find some amazing works of art that I'd be too afraid to write in!

I try to keep all of my writing tasks and blog tasks in this planner. I've learned some tips and tricks along the way, and color coding certain tasks helps me the most. I can quickly scan the pages to see which things need my attention most.

I even keep track of what I read!

I'd love to hear if you're a planner addict or if you prefer some other method?

Inspiration Strikes! by Laura Hunsaker

As an author, the most common question I'm ever asked is, "Where do you get your ideas?"
I don't really have one answer to that, and every author is different. In my last post Good Vibrations, I talked about music. That's a big source of inspiration for so many people, in all aspects of life, let alone writing. But every now and then something happens that just...works.

I take my dogs out for a run almost every morning and I hate running. I really hate it. It's about 108 out and I'm hot and tired and I'm doing something I don't like. Because I run in the desert, I can't always listen to music, since I'm keeping an ear out for rattlesnakes. So, how do I distract myself from the fact that I'm jogging in the desert? I daydream.

And what do I daydream about? Well I'm glad you asked!

I have a new neighbor. He's young and fit, and about a dozen young and strong guys helped move in, and all I could think of was...wolf pack. Because isn't that where most of our minds would go? ;) Werewolf is the obvious answer here. My new neighbor is a werewolf.

Maybe that's what I should title my next book?

So, while I'm not saying he's a werewolf,  I am saying that if I found out he was...I wouldn't be surprised.

He's kind of grumpy. He's strong. He runs fast, like way too fast for any mortal. Remember how I said I jog out in the desert? He blasts by me at super speed...supernatural speed, if you catch my drift.I keep finding dead animals in his yard. I mean sure we have coyotes, but...really, what's more reasonable here? Obviously that he's a werewolf.

So, what can I do with a werewolf? I mean besides give him some space, obviously. What if he helps me, a widowed kindergarten teacher hang some new curtains? What if I bake him some cookies as a thank you? What if he's only grumpy because he's been up all night hunting a rogue wolf who's now after me? Maybe my new neighbor has to keep me safe...and close. (eyebrow waggle)

So the next time you're reading your favorite author's book, just remember that our ideas may start farfetched, or even silly, but by the time we work them into a story, you've now got a werewolf who hunts bad guys at night and still finds time to help his neighbor hang her new curtains.

While My New Neighbor is a Werewolf is still just a daydream, Icing the Puck isn't. It's book 2 in the New York Empires, a slightly paranormal hockey team. I write as Kenzie MacLir in this anthology, and keep your eyes peeled for the next installment where my hero is a werewolf...a hockey playing werewolf whose brother asks him to babysit the pack while he's out of the country. Just think of all the hijinks that can ensue when the alpha's twin brother is in charge?

Good Vibrations: Writing to Music by Laura Hunsaker

If you're on Twitter, you'll often see a tweet from an author about writing in a coffee shop. And just as often it'll spark a conversation about who needs absolute silence while writing, or who needs white noise, or who needs a public space. It got me to thinking that while I don't have the time to write in a cafe, I absolutely would. I can't write in the silence. I usually write at night when everyone is in bed, and I always have ear buds in and music in the background.

It took me a while to find my groove for Dark Past. I originally started by listening to Hamilton, but anyone who's ever heard that soundtrack knows you just can't listen without singing along, so as much as I loved it I had to try something else. I used the Braveheart soundtrack for my last Highlander book, but that didn't feel right for a Romantic Suspense.

Then I heard a Sam Hunt song on the radio one day, and I knew that was it. Sam Hunt's "Break Up In A Small Town" was the one.

My new release Dark Past is set in a small town in Northern California, and I'd love to share what was running in the background as I wrote!

So let's do a quick playlist of what I've been writing to (I linked each song to youtube because it was easiest).

Sam Hunt's "Break Up In A Small Town" was on repeat for me for a while.

And one scene is absolutely perfect for "Ex to See" also by Sam Hunt.

Brantley Gilbert's "Bottom's Up"

Luke Bryan and Karen Fairchild's duet "Home Alone Tonight"

Luke Bryan's "Someone Else Calling You Baby"

Sam Hunt "Make You Miss Me"

Some more Sam Hunt with "Take Your Time"

Carrie Underwood's "Heartbeat"

Luke Bryan "Strip It Down"

Fallout Boy "My Song Knows What You Did in the Dark"

Sam Hunt "Leave the Night On" I mean really it was almost every single Sam Hunt song lol

During the climax and action scenes I actually went for instrumental selections with the How to Train Your Dragon 2 soundtrack.

If you've read Dark Past, let me know what you think of the songs I listened to while writing it! Don't forget to enter the giveaway below!
